Hi,

I am a landed immigrant, planning to move permanently to Vancouver, BC early next year. Being on the wrong side of fifties, I am keen to start something on my own, rather than to attempt to start a career in Canada at this belated stage in life. I have been following the discussions of CD for a while and find that most of the active participants in the discussion are from Toronto area. However, I am sure there must be CDs from Vancouver and nearby locations as well, who may not be active contributors to the forums, who also can possibly help me with ideas about starting a business there. I would, therefore, request anyone with knowledge of the local conditions to guide me in planning to set up a business there, including quantum of personal funds to be invested (the lesser, the better), possibility of obtaining loans and subsidies by a new immigrant, type of business(es) that offer low or medium risk and moderate returns etc. As additional inputs, let me add that I am a senior HR professional with international exposure in HR and recruitment functions, with a fair amount of exposure to Financial Management functions as well, and has a son who is a Web Development professional already in Vancouver, trying to set up his own business.

Proposals for joint ventures also are welcome. Please feel free to PM me if you need any additional details.

How much are you wanting to make? Will it be at an average $10 an hour or $ 25 an hour or $ 50 and above an hour of work that you invest in.
You can either open up a convienence store, lottery kiosk, Francise, real estate, Labour supply firm etc…
Are you fixed on Vancouver b’cos you son works there? Canada is a risky place to do business. You could lose all your money (97% of the time)

Sincerely,

Red

Thank you for the prompt response.

Ideally I would like to make something like $25 an hour, working around 12 hours a day, with my wife assisting me part time, with an additional $10 per hour going to her. For this type of returns, what is the quantum of my own money I should be investing?

After reading the postings in CD, I think I would stay away from fanchise model of business. Real Estate and Labour Supply/Placement business do appeal to me. Do they require any licences to run? What are the possible risks involved? Any input from experienced CDs would be appreciated.

Yes, the main reason for chosing Vancouver is my son being there (with a possibility of my daughter and son in law migrating there shortly. Both are hotel management professionals, incidentally).

I am ready to take reasonable amount of risks in running a business, but not too much.

I was living in Toronto. now I am in Vancouver. Culture and people are so different. First go Vancouver and think. Real estate is big business here. see your self what suits to you.
