Well in 90s / 80s also many of friends were not so outgoing and we used to call them kitabi keedas, zombies, chashmish, dheeela , padakoo, pajamachchaap, bhenji etc. .....So whether you check email daily or weekly , whether you open facebook many times a day or do not have an account , this depends on an individual. Every era gave inactive people.
Many of my friends who are football/cricket players have facebook account and they go out extensively. I do lot of travelling outing & picnic, evening walks , movies, liesure driving, eat outside etc. and I have also the facebook account. Many of my friends are like that.. i call it double majaa. I have sound remembence from my childhood in 80s going out in aam ka baags, playing all kind of games including kanchey , gulli danda, mohalla cricket, professional football...but that was then, I enjoyed then , I enjoy being on facebook and linkedin.
We can not force our kids to take them back to our days , this is there world, world of social networking, mobile phones, SMSs. Forcing them out of it is grossly wrong, you can only delay their indulgance like my father delayed my movie/tv watching by not allowing it that time , Now I watch lot of movies. I am sure everyone of us will have such story to tell..what do we learn from that ?
All in all , you can show the way to your kids but to forbade them from doing what most of their frineds in society does will only increase their curiosity ...
I advocate mix of everything...
