Hi I am writing an invitation letter to invite my parents here for a visit. We'd like a 5 year multiple entry visa. Is it a good idea to request this in the invitation letter. Or should be wait until they are here in Canada and request an extention at that time.

Please let me know what is better. I appreciate your help..

you can try the 5 year multiple. Nothing wrong with that. It actually shows that they want to go back to their home country. [a good point]
