Hi
I will be out of Canada for 4 months. I thought I can temp suspend the cell phone service but Rogers says there is nothing like that. I have a data plan and pay 75/m. The only option they gave me is to go with the lowest plan which I still have to pay about 30/m.

So I am thinking of breaking the contract and cancel the service. In such case I heard I have to pay a penalty of 400. What do u think is the best option. Pls suggest me.

Thanks

Breaking the contract u have to pay..Its a trap !

120$ vs 400 $

choice is urs...and I am sure u will need the services when u r back.

cheers

Do you have a contract for data? If you added data after initially signing up, chances are there won't be a data contract. Even if there is one, the charge for breaking data contract is $100. In 4 months, you will be paying more than that in monthly fees....

$400 or $20/month for the remaining term is for voice part only. Again, you may be paying more than $100 in voice charges also for the 4 months. If you are looking to upgrade the phone etc., it might make sense to break this contract, and sign up a new one with a discounted phone once you are back.

Also you can call and ask to cancel the service and they may allow the seasonal suspension (This is normally given only when there is no contract in force). The retention CSRs have more rights to give you discounts etc. over the regular CSR's...

Usually the contract breakage is for the company to recover the cost of the discount on the handset, that was probably provided at a very low cost to u..

Another option - try to sell it on Craigslist.

Please refer your contract.

You must have received the contract when you have signed up for rogers.

Everyone has different cancellation clause in contract.

It is not advisable to terminate the contract.

In order to avoid "high and ridiculous" cancellation fees continue your connection.

Except for the high end smart phones, the cancellation fees are always more than the hardware price. Even for the high end phones, if you factor in depreciation, cancellation fees will be higher. In Quebek, they got a law for the past year or so which tops out the cancellation fee to the actual discount provided minus depreciation. Manitoba is following suite. Hopefully ON will too. But Telcos are finding ways around through admin fees etc.
