Dear Friends,
Greetings,
This wonderfull forum is full of people at all stages of the immigration process. Some have successfully completed it and 'completed the grind', while others are undertaking the process. A theory in human geography says 'Immigrants are the most resilient component of a population, as they leave the security of a known place to go and explore opportunities in lands unknown'.To succeed in a land where you were not born requires a wide range of personal qualities, which help you during your assimilation process in the new society. It would be interesting to know answers to the following two questions from all fellow members:
1.The three traits that helped you/or you feel are helping you most in getting assimilated into the Candian society.
2.How far education and communication skills helped ease the pain of assimilation.
3.How essential is financial reserve in getting adjusted in the Canadian economy. What is the sufficient amount , which can help an average immigrant settle down in Canada (Not with excess luxury or in dire straits)
Regards

1.The three traits that helped you/or you feel are helping you most in getting assimilated into the Candian society.
Ans: I've never conciously tried to get 'assimilated' into 'Canadian Society' as such. So I cannot say if I am 'assimilated' yet
Here are somethings(not traits) that have helped me feel more at home. For traits..an open mind is the only trait necessary...everything else should follow.
a)Kids ...they are a good icebreaker and when they go to school you meet other parents etc.
b) Picking up activities I enjoy...outdoor sports.
c) Buying a house: Nothing makes you feel more at home than in your own house...you finally understand what those home improvement shows are about.
d) Job:It helps if you can afford abc
2.How far education and communication skills helped ease the pain of assimilation.
Ans: For a job..it plays a role...else...in my case, not much. An open mind helps a lot more for one to feel at home. If you try to recreate India/Middle east etc...chances are, you are going to be dissapointed.
3.How essential is financial reserve in getting adjusted in the Canadian economy. What is the sufficient amount , which can help an average immigrant settle down in Canada (Not with excess luxury or in dire straits)
Ans: Very essential. The amount would depend on the # of people and the lifestyle they expect( ones luxury is anothers necessity). Do a search on this site for info on this topic.

Yeah Jake you are right, an open mind goes a long way in helping to find your place in your society. From my experince i can say an open mind coupled with 'confidence in yourself' and a determination to succeed.
I was just curious as to what in general is the reaction of the average Candian to the immigrant. Are they supportive or do they discourage.

1.The three traits that helped you/or you feel are helping you most in getting assimilated into the Candian society.
A.
1) Persistence
2) The fact that canada is still better than back home in case of oppurtunities.
3) Human beings are equal here........what every religion taught us, but is forgotten in our countries. I am no better than a guy on the street and no less than a guy in a Rolls Royce.
2.How far education and communication skills helped ease the pain of assimilation.
Communication is very important (I repeat! very important) for getting a job, networking, picking up what others are saying in daily life......I got 17 job offers in first seven months of my stay in canada (although none of the jobs were of my field). Education plays an important factor too...and you have the oppurtunity here to have free education.....or deferred payment education if you wanna take it like that.
3.How essential is financial reserve in getting adjusted in the Canadian economy. What is the sufficient amount , which can help an average immigrant settle down in Canada (Not with excess luxury or in dire straits)
If you have a financial reserve, it can definitely help you to settle down earlier. However, if you dont have any money, you can still adjust in canada, it will be only tougher and longer.
