Who cares what they think ?

Boss if you begin going by what others think and want of you , very soon you will be homeless ..... esp in a place like Canada , you should learn to say 'NO' .

To Rajcanada's point - that s exactly what I m saying that tips are unexhibited costs .. why not add it as a service charge and let the customer decide whether they want to visit ..... its like 'Give me $10 , but lend me only $5' :)

It is the actual custom & its validity that I m questioning - a guy gets paid for his job .. right .... if a taxi driver is meant to drive me form point A to B , where s the question of tipping extra ??

By the same logic , I m begining to feel that bribes in India appear to be valid as the people are just charging public something for doing their jobs ....... thoda chai pani ...

I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you and fed up myself with this 'tip culture'. Who cares a dime what the server or the cashier thinks. They are duty bound to serve the customer and getting paid by their employer, just like the rest of us. May be they won't serve me with the smile, but heck! I don't care. This whole tip culture is annoying, uncomfortable, and intimidating, to say the least. It's my money and I and only I govern where should I spend it taking into account my own budget and pocket. And now on top of it, we have all sort of services that demand these extra monies (read 'extortion').

It's just another extortion by the restaurants, salons, cab services, and God knows what else.

I would rather give the money to the poor than the ones already getting paid to do their jobs.

I don't get tips at my work, then why should I pay the one other than for the listed price of the goods/services?

Well, if everyone stops tipping, then restaurants will not be able to find workers at present wages. Then they will spend more on wages and when their costs go up and they will pass it on to customers.

Sure! Pass the cost to the customers. Those who could afford to eat out will continue to do so, and the rest that can't will stay out considering their own affordability and budget. It's a free will, Bill.

Other people we customarily tip: taxi driver, hair stylist, esthetician, airport porter etc.

+1
min should be 15% tip.
Not sure what is the nature of your job fido, but when you are getting served or in other words a personalized service is provided, tip becomes integral part of bill. That is the nrom.
Lets take an example, you have been invited to a friend's child's birthday...you are not required to get expensive gift; not even a gift. Why should you get one right? because the b'day is celebrated for his happiness..If you don't bring the gift friend will not treat you badly. It is just that the little child may get disappointed especially if you are the only guest.....(but who cares, you saved the money)...anyhow
Here are some of the reasons you should tip when you are getting a service and not expect a tip when you are doing a job at office.
1) It is a norm. It is immoral not to give tip, it is not illegal. Better you get served more the percentile should be.
2) Many of the employees take the service job mainly considering the tip as an income, you are directly/indirectly responsible for cutting their income even though they did their job.
3) 15% of your tip is far more valuable to the folks who are serving you than putting those 15% in your pocket. Again because they consider as part of their income when they take this profession. if 15% is not affordable, MCDs and fast food joints are there to serve your needs.
4) Not giving tip indicates that someone did not do their job as expected. So poor fellow will keep wondering what did I do wrong.
5) No one will treat you badly because you did not tip. It is again some one who will be disappoited (somewhat like friend's child).
6) You visit restaurant as a leisure whereas waiters make earnings by serving you and expecting tip from you. If the norm would not have been there, like in fast food, this would not have been an issue.

Again it is not required, but it is immoral to not tip. Do the right thing by tipping when it is expected to tip. No one will treat you badly but will think that customer as a jerk (and I know who cares as long as 10-15% is back in the pocket!).

Bhootnath ,

You are mixing up 2 things - gifts & tips (income ) .. They are not the same .... You gift some one on an occassion , you don't gift some one for doing their job ... For that they have something known as income.

As far as reducing some one s income at your expense is concerned , why stop here ... Why not buy the most expensive car on the market or that Rogers cable which you don't need .... In a way you d be reducing Rogers'income ......

If I have to do charity why should I do it for a jobber --- there are people who need it more ....

Question is - Should some one expect / be paid extra for doing their job ??

Nope not mixing up 2 things..It is the expectation, norm, sort of a culture. Some of us are not able to make the peace with the fact that tip is part of income when this job is taken. Here,in NA,..ok now all over the world including India, the expectations are set that when you are served, tips are extended. Many of the waiters take this job only for the sake of tip than the actual salary.
