Dear CDs,

In the past 1 week I came across 3 of my friends whose email account were hacked and they lost access to it. Even the service provider could not give them back their access due to forgetting of security information entered while opening the account. Maybe it is just a coincidence, all 3 were hotmail accounts.

Many time our email accounts are registered to many of the utilities as well.

Request all CDs to revisit the profile page of their 'secure' email address and review or change the security questions to something you can recollect easily.

If other CDs have more ideas, please share for the benefit of all.

Hiren,

Good point about taking precautions on email. One thing to keep in mind is that if the account is hacked, the hackers can easily change the security responses, rendering that second line of defense useless.

However, even if you don't remember your security question responses OR suspect they have been altered, you can still try to get your account fixed. For hotmail, use the following link and select "I think someone else is using my windows live ID" option

https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx

Ask your friends to try this out, worked recently for someone I know.

Some other proactive measures aside from what you mentioned

1. Run malware software on your PC and update it regularly. If your pc is hacked and someone is running a keylogger on it, none of your online accounts are safe (including email).
If you're running windows, I recommend downloading Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free. Also, run WINDOWS UPDATE regularly (or set it up to run automatically). It is a pain sometimes, but the updates generally have security hole fixes that are critical to have.

2. Secure your WIFI by enabling password protection. I also recommend enabling a MAC address filter using your WIFI admin console, this ensures only YOUR machines can connect even if someone hacks the password.

3. In email (say hotmail), change filtering to receive emails only from your Contacts. Everything else goes to junk. I do this and makes my email review a lot easier. I scan junk quickly every couple of days to see if anything is legit (99% of times it isn't) and add to contacts whatever is, so next time it comes to my inbox.

Do not click on links in suspicious looking emails, even from your known contacts. When I get that, i usually reply to my contacts asking them if they really sent a mail or their account was hacked or spoofed.

4. Be wary of add ons or shareware you install on your computer. Read reviews before installing anything. Otherwise you may be installing a trojan disguised as an anti-virus. Teach your kids or anybody else using the computer the same.

Nothing I know of makes your computer completely impenetrable, but some basic common sense measures reduce the chance hacking drastically.

How do you go about doing this. Is it complicated?

I have router which has password protection.

Thanks.

First you need to write down the MAC address for each of the device you need to connect through the router.

Then open the router management window and under wireless tab, there should be a tab for wireless MAC filter. Click on that tab and add the MAC address of each device. Click save before your exit.

Good luck.

Two lakh Facebook accounts have been hacked recently. The news is in first page of Times of India and many other newspapers.
