Interesting observation to note is that cost of living is less against the hugely and highly purported view of Indian living costs ( and salaries ) being inflationary .

I have a feel that due to the neo rich ,there are 2 markets in India - one for them (like branded stores , malls etc ) and the other for the common man . Take your pick . You have the option .

I was at the mall the other day and wanted to have a cup of coffee at teh cafeteria. The size is abt 1/3 of what we get in Tim's small coffee. Rs. 24 per cup. But people dont care, they spend a lot. Eateries at the malls are making a killing. Families end up coolly spending 800-1000 bucks for lunch at the mall cafeteria. College going kids couple of hundred bucks are common. God knows where they get the money. Some people flaunt their money, some dont.

Govt has too much benefits for the poor, no wonder they dont want to come up in life else they lose the benefits. No child left behind may slowly create havoc as they cant pass the public exams. Their knowledge is somewhere down 4-5 standard in school.

Kumar M,
You are lucky yarr! Staying in a metro.
I live in a backward capital state of India and it is the way that I saw India in 1983. The rush hour starts at 11:00 am. I am still able to get a seat in the bus, just before rush hour.
25 cleaned small fish is just Rs. 50 (around 2 lbs). Our Gas cylinder which come for 2 ½ months of cooking (incl. making hot water for bath) is just Rs 400.
So still cost of living is low in smaller places but places like b’lore, Hyderabad and the like have places to spend money. Coffee in my canteen is Rs 5 and Rs 8 at a tea shop under the tree.
Real estate prices have gone up in all cities. The RE prices in the place I stay is equal to that of b’lore (not in the city centre). In b’lore I can get a decent apartment at Rs. 4300 / sft. In my backward town the rate is Rs. 4200 at the outskirts of town

Regards,

Peace

Right observation ! ! Govt promotes lethargy, dullness and corruption of minds.

Privatization since early 90s and advent of jobs in private companies has definitely scaled up the interest in knowledge gain and smarten up the Indian youth.
