Angry dad who shot daughter’s laptop on YouTube stands by public punishment

The father who chastised his 15-year-old daughter — and then shot her laptop in a YouTube video — says publicly punishing children is “how I was raised.”

“If I did something embarrassing to my parents in public (such as a grocery story), I got my tail tore up right there in front of God and everyone,” Tommy Jordan exclusively told the Toronto Star.

The eight-minute video, called Facebook Parenting: For the Troubled Teen, has attracted more than two million hits since Jordan posted it online Wednesday. In it, the North Carolina father reads a letter that his daughter Hannah posted on her Facebook wall.

“To my parents: I’m not your damn slave,” it begins. The expletive-ridden post continues with Hannah complaining about the chores she must do and what she feels is unreasonable treatment by her parents.

“You could just pay me for all the (expletive) I do around the house,” the note says.

After responding to each point in Hannah’s letter, Jordan takes out a handgun and shoots her laptop to “put a stop” to her disrespectful behaviour, he says.

“It’s about to get a whole lot harder today,” Jordan says. “I’m gonna post this on your Facebook wall, so all those kids that thought it was cool for how rebellious you were can see what happens.”

At one point, Jordan scolds Hannah for trying to hide the post from her parents by using Facebook’s privacy settings, and says he works in information technology for a living. Jordan runs a North Carolina-based IT solutions company called Twisted Networx.

Since the video’s gone viral, Jordan has been called everything from a “hero” to “insane.”

Jordan wrote on YouTube that he made the video so that “Maybe a few kids can take something away from this ... If you're so disrespectful to your parents and yourself as to post this kind of thing on Facebook, you're deserving of some tough love. Today, my daughter is getting a dose of tough love.”

Hannah won’t be allowed to post on Facebook for “a long time,” Jordan wrote to the Star. “I feel certain that every day from then to now, whenever one of her friends mentions Facebook, she’ll remember it and wish she hadn’t done what she did.”

More than 22,000 have “liked” his post on Facebook and the post has been shared more than 10,000 times.
