In North America, most of the time we send thank you note after an interview, irrespective we get selected or not. I had an interview with a repuited research institution. I knew all the interview panel members, except one. I had never met him or heard of him. I thought that sending thank you note to the ones who I knew would be ridiculous. So I just sent to the one that I did not know. It was a three line thank you note.
Now this has got me in trouble. After I sent the note, I came to know that he was one of the big guys in the institution. He thought that I was "trying to influence" him. Truth is I did not know who he was till the interview. I was just courteous. He complained to other panel memebrs and forwaded my email, the thank you note. I told some of the panel members that it was common in the west. I hope they read through this and not make a big deal out of it.
I am not sure what point you are trying to make KumarM?
With such a demand on qualified (read west returned) human resource in India, I am wondering if they would ever take it in the wrong way, unless it was for a govt. job.
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
Just ignore that, it would take years for our people to not mix emotion with profession.
But on your side, you could've have sent to all the members at once. I think you took it light with people you are familiar.

The cowards never started,
The weak died on the way,
Only the strong arrived.

The fact that you chalked out email address of one panel member and sent him only the note is the main cause of little commotion there. That poor soul is trying to keep himself clean it seems. Ideally send to all , in reply to the meeting request, that rather would have done wonders !!
Lessons Learned :
1. Should wait till result to come out before sending the note of thanks.
2. Mentioning in the note , it being a general practice , out of your own habit or as learned in west would have been better plus an education for panel members.
3. When sending , send to all .. see them and let you be seen by all with one eye.
thanks for the share.

If he is one of the big guys there and if a thank-you note can cause so much mis-communication, do you want to work there?
