1. The moment you acquire citizenship of another country you have to surrender your Indian Passport. It is illegal to keep it afterwards. read the instructions towards back of your Indian passport.
2. When India announced dual citizenship they CLEARLY announced that everybody, and I repeat, everybody, must re apply for the dual citizenship to get an Indian Pasport. You can not keep your existing passport because they want to screen people.
3. The only option at present is either to get multiple entry visa for India (5 years) or get a PIO card which is damn expensive.
4. Also instead of quering each other on message boards such serious enquiries should be directed to the respective embassies or cosnsulates.
5. And by the way, India does NOT have embassy in canada. It is high commission just as Canada has one in delhi.

DIE HARD !
Also seriously consider the other ramification of having dual citizenship.
Remember that in case you get into legal difficulties in India the ability of the canadian govt to help maybe limited.
e.g: http://www.geocities.com/zahra_kazemy/enter.html
They cound not get the body back to her son in Montreal...one of the reasons for this was her citizenship status.
Ofcourse cases like these are a minority..however its good to have enough info about anything before making a decision.

How much does getting a PIO card cost? Just to confirm, once I have a PIO card, I guess I will not need a visa to visit India, will I?
Hmmm...and that's interesting about having to surrender the passport. Illegal alright, but how in hell will the Indian Govt ever know I have got Canadian citizenship unless I or the Canadians tell them?

biomed,
"When you take Canadian Citizenship Oath your landing paper (IMM 1000, if I am not wrong) get de-faced. You may travel to India on your valid Indian Passport but certainly you won't be able to leave India with the same passport as you won't be having any valid visa to visit Canada"
Well since we have the PR card now, the IMM 1000 may not have any value. Can we show the PR card when leaving India (that we are landed immigrants), still hodling the Indian passport?
chor_Per_mor,
I spoke to the high commission (thanks for correcting me). I am told that I have to surrender the Indian passport after I get the canadian passport.

PIO card will cost you C$ 480.00 for 15 years and you do not need visa to visit India once you have PIO Card.
You don't have to surrender your passport to the Indian High Commission but that passport would be useless after you receive your Canadian citizenship.
You are right that Indian Government won't be able to know about your Canadian Citizenship but there is a little catch
