I think the OP is not aware of the distance between Toronto and Vancouver. He will get bored.
Canada is not USA. It is a landscape less place in the summer.
I heard that from the end of Ontario to just after the sask. border (a very good distance by itself), it is nothing but fields with not much human population. What would you do in those circumstances.
What I would do it to steer off the highway and follow the sides roads. Your speed may be less but you can see the villages and the character of it.
I would strongly suggest that the OP does not do this kind of trip by himself.

Peace

I am assuming you have driven through Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, etc. If you were to take a trans conti trip across the USA, you'll pretty much see what you'll see in the prairie provinces - flat land with corn fields.

The best entertainment I have seen on my drive through Nebraska (Hastings to be specific) was a bull having "fun" with his mate....priceless :)

I did this travel a few years back from Calgary to Toronto and also from Calgary to Vancouver all by myself(Don't ask me why I did this).
From Calgary, I stayed at Regina/Moose jaw, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay before reaching Toronto. As TK mentioned, about 70-80%% of the journey from Calgary to Winnipeg till Thunder Bay is all fields and can be very boring. The drive from Thunder Bay to Toronto is really good.
From clagary to Vancouver, it is about 1000 kms and is all mountains. Considering the single lane, constructions and the mountains, I stayed at Revelstoke which is half way. I must admit this is one the best part of my long drives similar to Jasper.

It is very essential to have a fully charged cell phone with a good service provider that has a good coverage and a latest GPS. Also it is good to know your viscinity so you can guide CAA or any help in case of emergency.

If I were to do this again , I prefer to go through US as it has some major cities on the way.

If that is what turns you on, then please come to TN, you will see pig, dogs, Sheeps, cows doing the same at a very often frequency on the streets !

That experience would be double priceless mate !!!

I just made a trip of 3000 kms from Toronto to Regina, SK... however, I did not take Trans Canada # 1, I took the US way (through Chicago)...
I alone made this trip in 3 days (1000 kms each day) and I was not bored at all... I loved the drive.. Next time I would take Trans Canada # 1...
I do not suggest to rent an SUV unless you are with bunch of family/friends... Because you will be consuming more than double of the fuel that will be used by a compact car.
I made the drive with my personal car and had no issues through out.
I don't recommand taking your personal car but I am here for quiet a long time and needed my own vehicle.... But there's nothing wrong driving your own vehicle as long as it is reliable and in good condition and you make frequent stops and you have proper CAA coverage... Thats all

Alternatively you can take train (The Canadian) and see the whole country from the comfort of you cabin. They make long stopovers at major cities like Winnipeg and Edmonton. I have travelled extensively in Europe but this was the most comfortable and enjoyable. You may watch my experience from below link:
