Waterloo Region, Ontario –-Waterloo Regional Police are issuing an alert to the community to review their home security measures and consider additional safeguards for their valuables.
In recent weeks, police have investigated numerous residential break and enter incidents within Waterloo Region and found that these homes had been targeted for collections of high carat gold and other valuables.
Police are aware of similar previous incidents outside of Waterloo Region in which a contributing factor was the suspect group’s intimate knowledge of culturally diverse communities, their customs and practices.
Detectives are concerned that local residents are now among those being targeted. None of the incidents reported locally involved injuries.

Few of them have been reported in the Rexdale area (Etobicoke) as well. An acquintance of mine have been robbed off all of their Gold and cash in the house, alongwith the small electronic devices, i.e. Laptops, Satellite receivers, Blu-ray player, etc. This, despite of having an alarm system.
Few tips:
1. Keep Gold in the Bank's locker.
2. Do not keep any cash in the house. Strangely, why people need cash in the days of debit cards?
3. Get the alarm tested for monitoring. Keep all the phone numbers updated in the alarm company's records.
4. Get a sticker sign 'Beware of Dogs' . It actually works.
5. Keep the foyer lights on.
6. If car is parked in the drive way, get a steering wheel lock.
It is not foolproof, but at least you will have tried your best.
More important is beware and alert that you are being tracked for your timings of going out and returning home. They observe you and your family for days before deciding the comfortable time of breaking in. They know you don't have dog, have security system and your net worth for the car you keep, clothes you wear and schools you are sending your kids to.
Scary !
one of our relative got robbed recently (brampton), they got more attentive, few days later the lady saw a service truck parked outside neighbors house and two guys trying to water or spray on the driveway but looking more around than concentrating on work. She called the neighbors who were at work to know if they hired somebody recently, they denied. In the mean time. seeing her activities of calling and getting restless, those two guys hurriedly boarded the truck and sped away. She failed to note the number down, I wont blame her as she is not trained.
Moral of the story !
Keep looking around when you go out or come in, specially for the Cars parked outside and people in it . If they see you attentive chances are they will not take chance on you.
Wake your Sherlock up and keep a mental diary of car numbers and models of your neighbors. it helps in many way !

These smart phones have replaced our mental diary & have basically retarded our mental telephone number (or any number for that matter) recalling memory
So, we have become a dumb people with Smart phones.
Time to dumb it down on the phone front.
I was surprised that all you need is one kick and the door breaks open. Video link http://youtu.be/fq0jO-x_CAM
One step you can take to make your door secure is install security strike plates.
