Indian DL is still valid. I drive with that on my visits and had gone through police random checks and got a fine for cell phone use too. I had shown the Ontario license as well (No IDP). Like mentioned before, much better treatment after seeing ON license! (I got my India DL on the day after I turned 18 and the picture looks nothing like me. Hence the ON license show)
But like others mentioned before, driving is becoming more and more dangerous. You still can do city and short distance driving. Longer routes, train or flight is better. There are pretty cool highways though - but you do run into vehicles coming in the opposite direction in a divided highway; some idiot walking and riding bikes in the middle of the road at night wearing black clothes etc.

Thanks a lot all of you for valuable inputs,
i am going to drive in just local city or short distance only....
One thing is for sure, we are going to be surprise and our eyes will be bigger once see all changes in India as we are going after 6 years to India....
Friends who visited india and they said be preapre for all surprises, the way people are spending money in India we can not compete at all. so many stuff are expensive and prices are rocket high, traffic is terrible, people still with same mentality, No sorry no thanks....just push you one side and walk away.....
we are eagerly waiting for this all surprises and hope we have a good vacation....
