Welcome to the lower mainland. As you are new, I would advise to stay someplace accessible to the transit points, especially the Skytrain stations. You can browse the area near Scott Road station - Surrey and North Delta. Another central place with the shopping district is 'Strawberry Hill' on Scott Road. It's just a bus away from the train station and you may find all major Banks, grocery stores, and a good Public library in there. There are a good number of Indian grocery stores in Surrey, regardless of where you live. I would say, it is Brampton of Metro Vancouver. If you browse, you should be able to find apartments.

Good neighborhoods are - Panorama Ridge, Boundary Park, Strawberry Hill, North Delta, Fleetwood, Sullivan Station/heights, Cloverdale, Tynehead.

If it's apartment then the range is 800-1200. Depanding upon the neighborhood and the condition of the building. Basements are generally cheaper in the range of 600-900.

Indian grocery stores - In abundance. Specifically gujrati - no idea. There's one in Vancouver on Victoria Dr. and 41st Ave. However, it would be quite far for you if you plan to live in Surrey.

Laxmi Narayan Temple: hindumandirsurrey.com. Biggest temple in the lower mainland. Another is ISCON in Burnaby. Been there a few times, but it's a bit far so we visit Laxmi Narayan temple itself. Besides ISCON is a bit westernized for me .

As with any North American suburb, there are a low number of jobs available. Most of the jobs are in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond. However, the companies are flocking to the city centre core and you can try. The latest I have heard is the Coast Capital Savings (Credit Union) headquarter. You can browse their site. I would advise you not to restrict yourself only to Surrey. If you have access to the skytrain station, you can look for the jobs in the neighboring municipalities, i.e. New Westminster, Burnaby, Richmond, Delta, Vancouver, North Vancouver, etc. Metro Vancouver is not that hugh as compared to GTA. From Surrey to Vancouver downtown via. Skytrain is only 40 minutes.

If you're already driving in Toronto, don't forget to bring your Driving abstract from the Motor Driving centre. Will help you in getting your license directly transferred to the BC one.
