Hi All,

I have lost the indian passport here in Toronto. Tried to search it everywhere, but could not locate it. I went to police station and got the complaint number. I collected all the required documents, fees for duplicate passport. The Consulate(on bloor street) accepted all my documents and said that the application will be processed once they receive the fax from Police. Immediately I went to College street Police and asked them to fax it to consulate general of India. They confirmed me that they have sent it(Infact they charged me $40). To be double sure, when visited the Consulate, they havenot received any fax.
Today afternoon, the college street police confirmed that they have already sent it. But they are not giving any confirmation document on the faxed document. The CGI ppl are not co-operative. It is a deadlock situation for me.
How do i deal with such situation?

Rgds,
Vijay

I have heard of this before with CGI ... They do not cooperate - typical Indian babu attitude ..Last time when a friend of mine was in similar situation and running from pillar to post at the CGI did not work for him he tried some thing advised to him by some one else and it worked ..The advice is as follows :

Find the email of top IFS Officers at the Indian Embassy & Email them SEPARATELY to 5 top officials at the Indian Embassy ... At least one will notice and chances are pull up the dealing babu .... Email separately and not cc other wise they may try to save face and you might lose in this exercise ...

Likewise you may also write a registered letter to Toronto Police asking them to confirm whether they have faxed your complaint ...They will reply in affirmative by post / email ..... Then you may follow the above step attaching a scanned copy of the letter ...

If emailing top Officials does not work , send a registered letter to the top most officer @ CGI attaching a copy of the Police response ..Accountability is absent in Indian work culture , it has to be enforced !

You already have a confirmation document in the form of receipt that you paid for the fax. Does it show any particulars? If your receipt mentioned the Fax details, you can use that as a documentary evidence.

Further, as Fido said, email the Police Deptt. and once they send you the response, you will then have a written confirmation.

Another thing you can do is to let the Police deptt. know about your ordeal and see if they could help further to provide you any kind of Fax confirmation. Canadian public offices are quite supportive if you ask their help.

Unfortunately, even after immigrating here you can't rid of Indian Govt. ways. It's like, "You can run, but you can't hide".

Hi Fido and Febpreet,

Thank you for the response. I will try the email follow up within few days as application is in early stage.
The $40 confirmation bill doesnot say anything about the fax. It is just like any other restaurant bill. It has only few details like total amount, seq# and Appr Code(Im not sure what the last two means). I went again to the College st police station to check whether they have resend the fax or not. They confirmed that they have sent it yesterday at 11:57 AM. When I asked for an acknowledgment for it, they politely denied stating security reasons. But the lady there called to the fax dept infront of me and confirmed it.
Immediately I reached consulate and said the same thing. The guy there said that since there are many pending passport application, I cannot confirm. It was like a momentary scary dream. I politely said that I just need a confirmation that all the required documents and reports are there with you to process the passport application. Then he immediately said that for security reason, I cannot confirm it. I was like What.???
He looked at the receipt that CGI gave me earlier. He pointed out at the date(and it was 16th aug) and asked me to come after 1 month to check ur passport status.
I immediately asked that what if at that time you say that you havenot received the fax. He kept mum and showed the careless face. I felt so bad. It is just a 2 minute job and donno why it would be a herculean task. But the CGI person at the entrance started talking to me in a soothing way and asked not to worry, If the police has faxed, then they will pin it to your application. However he asked me to after 2 weeks instead of a month. I felt somewhat relieved though he has no power in processing it.
One more option is that I can visit CGI on 2nd or 4th friday of the month for grievances from 4-5pm. It is there on website. I will address my issue there.
Hoping for the best.
