May be this is the problem with Phd people.
If you require Visa and work permit for your wife ( weather she works or not .... take it ... it won't hurt)
from your side:
take letter from university
letter from professor
show funds in bank ( if you do not have beg, borrow or steal deposit in your bank temporarily)
Make an affidavit/letter
copy of your permit
copy of your passport
From your wife side:
all completed forms
cover letter
money in the bank (do not say that she don't have)
Then you are done .... she will get it. If you do not know how to do it. Come to Toronto. I will help you.

So I did have all the documents as you stated but my wife doesn't have a bank account she used my account back home. Since I show her as a dependent on me, isn't it possible to go ahead without her bank account. As now if I do make an account and statement for her it will be apparent to Visa officer that I did this for just getting the visa and it is considered bad I guess.
If you work as consultant, can you just confirm to me that what is the maximum duration of a TRV for a student's spouse? My study permit is valid for 4 years.

You can add her name as joint account holder to the existing account. That will clear the hurdle of visa officer making notice of new account made for visa purposes.
There must be an account on the visitors name. She being able to use your ATM card with your name and signature on the card may be practical but technically will not be accepted.
With that kind of setup , even application of work permit will not go through in future. I am not expert on the work permits for dependents so will not able to inform much about its eligibility and qualification requirements.
