I do not know how many of you have tried getting a SIM in India in 2013, but when I last went there in Dec 2013, I was informed that due to rampant use of Indian SIMS by terrorist groups, a new law had been passed around Dec 8, 2012 whereby a new SIM cannot be given by a shopkeeper unless he has collected all the papers from the applicant and sent it onwards to the provider. This application has to be approved by the provider company and can take anywhere from 4-7 days in normal course and longer at times. I tried 3 different shops (and I was with my BIL who lives in Delhi and was applying in his own name)
I could not believe this and so did call up a senior executive of IDEA who is in my relation and he confirmed the rule. Since I needed the phone urgently, he had to arrange one immediately thru his Delhi office (which I got at the railway station when I was travelling from Delhi to Jaipur in late afternoon) and the other two for my family 2 days later (this was when I have my own relation in the high places in IDEA!!!)
The same person was here in Toronto last month and he has told me that I should inform him about 3-4 days in advance when I next need the SIM so that he can arrange it when I next land in India.
