My mother will be a new immigrant landing to Canada in early 2014. Once she lands she will have to fill out some required documentation (PR form, goods to follow list etc.) Since she has never left her country of origin and is in her 60’s,a nd does not understand english very well she may have problems communicating to the immigration officer in filling out documentation and answering her questions. Is there a means by which I assist her by physically being present with her at the appropriate area in the airport.I wont travel with her, just want to be there when she is asked to fill out forms etc.
Is there a formal way to request this? Can someone just walk into this area at the airport (i am thinking not)

Live and Let Live
I know tonnes of people who could not communicate even in Hindi or Punjabi properly forget English . None of them had a smallest bit of issues at immigration . People are very friendly and helpful . In worse case scenarios they can call the translator if required . Nonetheless also do not forget that there are quite a bit of workforce at the airport who are from India .
Good luck and congratulations that your mother is joining you .

Congrats! Yeah do not worry, just write a short letter stating that she is landing and will need a translater and ask her to keep it along with rest of the documents. They will provide assistance. Very good people at immigration. My parents were in similar situation but did not face any issue.
And then you might find some desis lurking around to make quick buck for assistance. Tell her to avoid desis who will offer help in exchange for money. (Just a joke...)
Good luck!
