Hello Cd's:
Happy valentines day !
Was wondering as to which countries in Europe (apart from UK) speak English as the official language. I know I can google it but as many IT industry employed CD's would visited many European countries and can give me a first hand answer to this.
In the past, I have visited France, Germany and Italy and had a tough time to even ask for directions.
My question is more directed to studying at the universities there and possibly working in that country after studies (and is not directed at immigration or employment).

Thanks in advance.

Peace by Murali

3. Austria
4. Denmark
5. Norway
6. Ireland
7. Finland (for the most part)

The English language is the official language of Gibraltar and one of the official languages of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Malta, Jersey, Guernsey and the European Union.**

According to a survey published in 2006, 13% of EU citizens speak English as their native language. Another 38% of EU citizens state (OR CLAIM) that they have sufficient skills in English to have a conversation, so the total reach of English in the EU is 51%.

Initially this language was spoken in the British Colonies and possessions. But then, when the trade and other skills made a demand on each country, they expanded their Educational systems to accomodate it as a second language and it is still offered in a lot of universities including Germany, Norway and Netherlands, where the EU head offices are located. This list is not very exhaustive. A search needs to be made if one intends to pursue studies there.

Most of the transport vehicle operators. especially TAXI Drivers, do speak broken English to get you from point A to Point B. Also most of the FIVE STAR Hotels hire people who speak mutiple languages.

Have lived in europe for 4 years, english language is issue in most of the countries, but it is not difficult to survive in case you live in metros.
What I observed was that dutch and germans areas ( germany, austria , german part of swiss like Bern, bassel etc) are easy on english, people understand english and can converse. Vienna (austria) and will be my favorite to stay.
French part will be an issue (obvious reasons !) barring Paris but that will be an expensive stay. Then there is Geneva, Vevey (swiss - french) areas , also are difficult a bit . Few jobs in Geneva require english speaking qualifications. Switzerland is headquarters to many large corporate houses and good place to stay ,I 'll recommend Bassel area not Geneva.
The east European, baltics etc will pose lot of issues to stay. Warsaw and some part of budapest are the only saving grace.

While the life in Americas is mechanical and money oriented , Europeans have better and warm sense of of life. btw Europe is nightmare for Vegie Indians from food perspective.
