My two cents (or 3):

1. If you're single, don't get married until you're all settled down here with a better job, house (apartt., townhouse, detached, etc). If married, do not move with your whole family. DO NOT (I repeat) sell your assets in India. Keep the family back home while you immigrate (or, let them leave after obtaining the PR). Look for a job, try to settle down, and once you have a job or a potential to land one in future, then and only then reunite.

2. DO NOT restrict yourself only to one part of the country when new. Look for the options throughout. Move where you find the job. Change your strategy if one doesn't work out. Explore, explore, and explore. Many immigrants commit this mistake of sticking to GTA or one part of the country for no apparent reason than just to be in the company of fellow desis; even while not having a job. Move!

3. If things do not work out - don't keep sulking and waste your precious little (yes, it's little, believe me) life. GO BACK TO INDIA; or where you have a potential to live a rather peaceful and happy life, especially when you already have tasted the fruits of never ending self-inflicted struggle by immigrating to a stranger country.

Well said.

Restricting mobility is a self inflicted death knell. I recall during the 2009 recession, I received more number of calls (and a couple of offers) from Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan than in Southwestern ON - all from multi-national manufacturing corporations.

Hi Dimple,

U said u r the mechanical engineer and I am happy to hear that u r in the same profession. But u did not elaborate on what hurdles u hv faced while achieving your goal. How much time it took to finish your P Eng ? . Anyway your success story will be an encouraging for new immigrants.

By the way I am also Mechanical engineer, but now relocated in India.

I don't have a P Eng and I do not intend to get one as I am beyond that phase in my life.

That being said, one major blunder made by many immigrants is to pigeon-hole themselves into a career path based on their education. Granted, it is natural to follow a career that best fits their education, but you'll find your degree is only a stepping stone that allows you not to start from the absolute bottom. I never had a job with a title, "mechanical engineer". My area of expertise is in manufacturing engineering, program management, product development, supplier quality management, lean, operations excellence, and quality systems management.

I will not claim that I am "Uber" successful (for success has many definitions), but I certainly didn't build my career thinking of how to scavenge off of free stuff either. Instead, I grabbed opportunities that decently fit my interests and capabilities.

Hurdles? Well, I started young (at 21), hence my hurdles were over before I had a family of my own. Plus, most of my hurdled life was when I was a student. This made the hurdles seem like normal life.

No one wants tos scavenge free stuff but if Canada offers you (immigrants) only scavenged stuff, you have no option except to exploit them. When one has oppertunities, he will take them (unless he is a drug addict or a mentally retarded fellow) but then oppertunities has to come and it does not come for a significant populations of Desi immigrants !
Does a Production Engineer come to Canada to work in Tim Hortons and clean toilets as per part of his job, though he may just have to do it for 3 or 6 months till he gets a better job? That is what Canada forces immigrants to do.

Think positive and never think of going back whatever may be the circumstances. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.

We came with no job, whole family landed at same time and we succeeded coz we cme with a determination to succeed!

That determination if shown in India yields better results.
Times have changed & now Modi is rewriting India's history, over the next decade India will far exceed growth.

1807 it was time to move to Britain
1907 it was time to move to US
2007 onwards its time to be in India (China, etc)

Dhaikin,
You never cease to amaze me. You rock this time as well. Hail Modi!
