Dera friends,

There is a very nice apartment available in Mississauga which has everything that one would want. The only problem is that school of my eldest son (14 yrs) is two kilometre away from the apartment. I have checked with the school also, but they say we don't give transport to regular students. Can someone suggest how can I overcome this issue, are there any private transports available for this purpose and how much do they charge ! My wife can't drive and I shall be away fro almost six months :(

Why not public transit. Im pretty sure, the public transit covers the school.

At that age my child walked or biked to school but only for the months it wasn't snowing.

You can offer cash to a neighbour who's willing to drive your child to/from school.

Usually, there will be someone in/around your apartment offering pick up/drop off kids to your school (usually a mom ferrying her own kids). They charge around $80 - $120 per month. They usually advertise on the board in the laundry room.

However, a 14 yr old boy will prefer to walk to/fro with friends or on his own.

@JRF, unfortunately no public transit right upto the schools, he has to walk around 1200 meters and for the rest 800, he can have bus. Would it be good idea to get him a bicycle, but am not aware if he can carry bicycle on particular ares / tracks or can roam about anywhere. Please suggest how strict are the laws if I go for this option. Thanks

For the age of 14, I would recommend walking. It will be a good excercise for the Kid.
Also other acceptable means would be to get a ride with other parents in the locality (for a fee).
Bicycle is an option, but I would not recommend it. Though you can cycle anywhere, some streets are not suitable for cycling and the risk associated with hitting someone / being hit by someone is significant.
However, you should also know that you can walk to the school office and ask the principal for options. canadian schools are bound to offer you options.
Other options is contacting your MLA / city counsellor.

Explore all possible options and think out of the box but in the end, I think you will choose walking !

Thanks TK, I have already checked with the school but could only talk to a receptionist, should have talk to principal at least, will try it. And how to reach MLA or councillor, any idea ! tK walking down not seem practical as it is not a short distance, 2 kilometre :( specially considering the harsh winters and ever falling snow, people like us who have never been to such climate ever may fall in real trouble. Thanks for some ideas atleast.
