TK, I am not gonna sell it after using for 45 days, instead will keep it cuz I have to move back again. So during those five or six months when it will be simply parked, I will get its insurance suspended. It is just a suggestion from few of my friends to save those 1500 CAD approx that I will pay otherwise renting a car. Besides I intend to appear rightaway for G road test after reach ing, so hopefully shall be having a license within a couple of weeks inshAllah.

Hasni:
But you have not replied to my previous observations, viz ...:

1. Is your IDP a regular license recogonised by ontario provincial police, if you get into any accident? Other wise the legal case can kill you.

2. The initial license is G 1 which you get after answering questions (written) about road rules. Then you get G2 (after a driving test). With this you can get an insurance and are legally allowed to drive a car. Before 5 years, you will have to get G status which is full license. So which one are you. G1 can be got in 1 or 2 days. Only after G1, can you enroll in G2. This may take months as a lot of immigrants are coming to Canada and the test centres are fully booked. So what is your status?

Hasni,

Your friends are not guiding you on all aspects.
By the time you get G1 license (say $100) , shop for a used car under good budget, pay taxes (13% - say 700$) decide on a very high insurance premium ($500-700 for the month for a new driver, even around $400 if u take 3rd party) , register a name plate ($150), pass safety (~50-100) etc. month will pass by. How will you do all this without a vehicle or public transport pass ($120)?

Rent or buy either way your losses (other than cost of car & depreciation over 6-7 months and risk) for the first month will be same. What is the purpose of your visit ? only to buy car ? Cause that will become your primary project.

If you are pulled over by an officer, he will ask you license and registration. You cannot show only idp if a car is registered on your name in canada, you have to have a license and on G1, you cannot drive, that will be an offence apart from reason for which you will be pulled over!

It does not make sense at all to buy an old car and leave it parked for 6-7 months, including winters and then expect a smooth ride thereafter. Paisey to lagenge !!

Hasni:
I second with San Hugo on this.
Just stop being over careful but concentrate on facts. It would be like :

1. Get a new IDP.
2. See if the rental car agency will give you a rental car with full insurance based on your IDP. Check with the ministry of transportation if this is allowed. Get a copy of the page to show to the police, if you are pulled over.

If you can't do this, just take public transit. May be pain but will give you peace of mind. The Ontario car driving system is designed for residents and immigrants. It is a slow process for immigrants where it will take its own sweet time to get a ontario insurance.

Dear TK and San Hugo, must say you guys have been of great help for new CDs like me, I agree that most of the hidden expenses were not on my mind while working on a used car option. TK, based upon my Saudi driving history, I shall be allowed to appear directly for G road test and I plan to do so this time, thus I can skip G2 :) Besides I have IDP which is going to be expired in August, I can't say for sure but assume that it is definitely recognized by Ontario police, cuz the agency who issues it clearly tells the countries where it can be used without any problem, Canada is listed there. However I couldn't get the point, why I shud go for a new one instead of renewing it, ..prob to hide my old record or for any other reason !
One of my friends works in a rental car company and says that once you buy a used car, he can help me getting the company number plates that can save me good insurance amount, is it a safe and legal practice !
After going throug San's post showing details of the expenses involved in getting a used car, I have almost decided to go for a rental one, but on line rent a car don't show anywhere what documents shall they be requiring when I go to take the car, can call them either cuz there are very few with phone numbers ! I fear, ...should not be denied a car because of having IDP, I have heard that some companies are strict on this. Anyone knows a rental car company in Mississauga or Brampton who are flexible in giving cars on IDPs and offer good rates, pls share. Thanks

Just keep in mind, if you fail the G test, you go back to the G2 test.
