I wish to get duct cleaning done in my house. I have got it done earlier but wish to understand the basic difference between the cleaning done by regular duct cleaning companies who charge anywhere between $100 to $175 and that done by companies like Sears who quote above $500.

I do not think that there is no difference between the two except name - in any business used by average households, the cost difference can be a maximum of say 100% (so no name company can charge $100 for which a known and big company will charge say $200). However, when the difference is 500% or so, there ought to be some difference or else the big companies would have shut down the business long ago since they can't fool the public all the time.

Does anyone have an idea what could the difference be due to? I do not mind paying $500 but I should get additional benefit of paying 4-5 times the cost of ordinary service.

Any suggestions welcome.

The answer you are looking for could be in this CBC Marketplace video. I was not expecting to find it but here it is from Jan 2013. http://www.cbc.ca/player/Shows/Shows/Marketplace/ID/2327202746/

Thanks for posting, Raj. I had not seen this before but this is a real eye opener. If someone on the forum does find a good Air duct cleaner who's a pro but charges appropriately, would be good to get a referral.

Just yesterday, I did the duct cleaning yesterday, I saw this post and decided wait until the work complete.

The company I used was ductcleaningspecialists.ca, I got referral through homestars, I decided after reviewing many other providers. They also had a $100 discount on a $429 / 15 vents duct cleaning. I ended up paying $329 + HST ( though I had 5 extra vents, they didn't charge).

From the booking to the work date, everything was very professional, contacts, work orders and reminders.

Before starting the work, he explained everything about the work he is going to do, it took about 2 hours complete, they cleaned the Central duct systems, vents, A/C, Furnace and finally used disinfectants to clean up.

Im having a hard time dealing with the hardwood guy in installing hardwood on a curved floor. :) :)

The difference between the regular guys and professional team are the following.

1. Equipments (I was able to notice visibly).
2. Certified people to touch the HVAC system.
3. A good system to handle the business.
4. Safety in handling /cleaning your expensive A/C and Furnace.
5. Reputation
