Also while coming back what are the things should I do and buy?

I thought about dental cleaning and buying some utensils?

Please give me more suggestions

Coming Back From India :

1. Anything that's ethinic/eastern wear like sherwani , kurta, salwar/kameez , sarees for ladies.

Do not buy any western clothes in India like shirt, pant , jeans etc , they are cheaper over here & better quality.

2. Cashews ..they are cheaper in India.

3. Masalas , Spices etc. You can get them over here too for pretty much the same prices, but Indian spices will be more fresh.

4. Anything dental as you mentioned , not just cleaning , but root canal , cavity filling , wisdom tooth removal etc.

5. Anything eye related like eye check up , prescription glasses . Much cheaper in India , if your drug plan doesn't cover it in Canada.

6. Leather belts , shoes , wallets etc , better quality in India & usually cheaper.

7. Ayurvedic or herbal medicines.

Going to India : ( Things to take from Canada )

1. Almonds & Pistachios . Cheaper over here in Canada , & Almonds are good for health.

2. Multi Vitamins , especially stuff like Omega 3 soft gels ..good for heart & brain functions.

3. Sports shoes like Nike , Reebok , Adidas cheaper over here ( when on sale ) & better quality. But NOT leather shoes or Dress shoes.

4. Even brand name western clothes like Levis Jeans , Wrangler jeans , Arrow dress shirts are cheaper over here & better quality.

5. Most electronics are cheaper , but only if you can avoid the duty & taxes on them at Indian airport, take them with you.
Otherwise don't bother, they are pretty much the same price in India.
Plus you won't have voltage , current , adapter issues. But I might try to go in with a used Ipad , Iphone or some other smaller but expensive gadget, not something bulky.

6. Sun Screen if you have sun issues . Deodrants , Anti perspirants etc.

7. Certain brand name perfumes , colognes & chocolates . Not all are cheaper but some are , when on sale & they are original & not counterfiet.

8. Anything that you want to donate to some charities in India like used clothes etc. Charities like Goonj etc are good.

chattersking,

Actually, why don't you ask your own self as to what do you think it will be worth for you to bring back from India and what your parents really need? We all will tell you from our own experiences that might not match with yours. So, spend a little bit more time sitting with a pen and paper, instead of harping upon what others really think you should do. After all, your life style could be different than ours.

Try it, and you will have better options that the ones we all provided you with. Let's keep it at that.

Some of the things that I take/bring:

To India:
1. Saffron
2. For persons with dentures - fixodent
3. I Pad (they are cheaper here - specially US due to sales tax)
4. Fleece pants and tops for winter - from Walmart (the quality is much better here than in India, unless they are imported)
5. Chocolates like Turtles, Lindt etc. for lovers of chocolate
6. Shelf Liners (paper and the rubbery ones for non-slip)
7. Vegetable peelers
8. Henkel knives
9. Fall or spring jackets with thin filling - they are great for Indian winters
etc.

From India:
1. Anything to do with medical/health - like prescription glasses, dental cleaning etc. as mentioned by others
2. Indian tradition clothes
3. Any repairs (Rafoo, suitcase repairs, shoe/sole repairs)
4. Custom tailoring
5. Cotton under clothes. (the quality that you get there is great and for similar quality, you pay three times the price here - say Jockey!)
6. English books by Indian authors, or even other books if you like reading them.
7. Souvenirs/gifts for your non Indian colleagues (like artificial jewellry, stationary sets made of marble, etc.)
8. For a sweet lover like me - Gud ki Gajak/rewadi/Ghevar/Phini which are not available here
9. Mukhvas (saunf/supari/paan/churi/churan)
10. Cushion covers if you use cushions on your couch here
etc.

Mods could consider adding a like/favourite button to tag some of the conversations on this forum :-)

Agree with the list above. Apple products are 20-30% expensive in India even when converted into rupees. I would also add

1) Branded perfume/cologne - available from Bay/Sears or at duty-free shops on airport
2) Canadian wines - if the recipient is an oenophile
3) Darjeeling/Assam/Srilankan tea - the stores also have good brewing pots

I think a considerable number of desis who have been here for a considerable amount of time are able to afford more than dollar store items. And Indian middle class can sure afford and appreciate luxury items.

On a side note, about carrying excess weight on plane, I know somebody who was working as luggage handler on Pearson, and he remarked how everybody dreaded Indian passengers as their luggage was the heaviest.

On a side note, few posts about flying with people of Indian origin

I am pretty sure you are aware that many books are available in Kindle version on Amazon.ca under $10 or even in public library. Saves on weight

We brought our second set of curtains from India. All custom made with pre-decided design and matching with wall colors. Saved almost 2k. I think. Go to a smaller city in India, you will get good quality cloth in cheaper price and great design. Never declare you are an NRI.

Chandresh's list makes lot of sense.
