Dear friends,
Being a starter in Canada would like to know whether accepting salary as cash is advisable or one should go for a cheque. Secondly, if I see a job ad saying 20 C$ per hour. How much take home does it come out finally. I am talking about the jobs like administrative assistant, AutoCad operator, security guard, cashier, etc.
Thanks
1. Most legitimate employers will pay you by cheque or direct deposit to your account. You may not have a choice in that matter. There are some businesses and franchises who maintain shady books and prefer to pay by cash to avoid taxation and who knows what else.
2. Try this link to get an estimate of your take home pay after deductions - http://www.ees-financial.com/calculators/TakeHomePayCalculator.htm
Convert the hourly rate into annual by considering 40 hour work week for 52 weeks a year. This is only an estimate and will change if there are additional deductions, such as the RRSP.

Though cheque or direct deposit is the way to go, you may take cash as well but more important is that by end of year (by 28th Feb) , your employer is providing you the T4 statement showing your total income from past year. T4 will be used for your tax returns, proof that Employer submitted taxes, CPP and EI. Used for decision on child tax benefits, T4 or tax returns can also be used when you sponsor somebody for PR or visit visa. Going forward you will have to submit Tax returns for citizenship application.

Any job that you see or have been hired for..if possible try to post the name of the company and nature of the job over here on Canadian Desi and the location.
Within no time , we can tell you if its a scam or not. Lot of newcomers get taken for a ride, so don't fall for it.
If the job says NO experience required or if it involves any sort of selling or telemarketing, head for the hills..lol.
Except low level labour jobs , don't expect to be hired for any other jobs without any experience.
Most of these jobs like general labour , security guard , cashier , basic administrative jobs etc are in the $ 11 to $ 14 range, generally in minimum wage range or a few 2-3 bucks more range.
So if its in the $ 20 range for the same type of jobs, its usually a scam.
Hasni,
It is very hard to get a job in Canada but if someone gives you cash, please accept it.
Advantages are as follows :
You need not report it to CRA the money and hence tax free.
Your income will be considered by CRA as zero and hence greater benefits.
Disadvantages :
You will not get pension as you did not pay into it (after age 60-70)
You will not get EI (Employment insutance) as you did not pay for EI.
You will not get second career benefits which is a free $ 28,000 to upgrade your studies.
So play as you seem fit.
In areas like McD, Tim hortons, they will pay by payroll only. In Desi owned Gas stations, you are likely to get Cash jobs.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
My advice to anybody here is report your income to Income tax and pay tax. If somebody reports u or u are caught of doing cash job and not paying tax, it is offence under Federal law and you will be deported.

Revenge can be bitter sweet, but if u sit back and watch, KARMA can be pure entertainment.
