Dear FH and seniors,

Could you please share the link or form, through which I can submit my first hand written tax return. As you know I am a new immigrant and have no job or local income yet. Please also give some tips about the necessary details that I need fill in this form. Will I have to reflect my worldwide income and the benefits I am receiving anywhere in this form. Do I need to submit a seperate form for my wife. She is not doing any job and is just a housewife. Thanks

Check the above link.

It is difficult to explain over a forum how to fill the form. For the first year, you might be better off having it done by a local tax preparer. A few places will do it for as little as $35, but the amount will depend on the complexity of the return.

Filing taxes and paying taxes are two different things. I'd recommend your wife files hers as well so as to create a record of filing, even if it means reporting zero as the numbers.

She would have to file taxes, if she wants her benefits to continue.

Dera Dimple,

Thanks for sharing link, but it contains a lot of forms and I am stuck at figuring out which is the right one for me. Would appreciate if you could be specific and share the link which leads me directly to the form I am supposed to fill. Regards

You should learn to use a little common sense and a little bit of computing skills and VOILA, you get exactly what you are looking for. So, start from the beginning and go over this process a few times. See how others get there. If they can, You too can get there. More power to you.

The one I have been filling looks like this.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/5006-r/5006-r-13e.pdf

It is here... : Forms and publications
General Income Tax and Benefit Package - Guide, return and schedules
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1gnrl/menu-eng.html

You live in ONTARIO ( I Am Guessing) So, go for Ontario. THERE is a fill-able form and another one that you can print and practice, available there. You have to do what ever you are comfortable with and mail it to them. Alternately go to their offices there in Toronto and ask for the forms for the YEAR that you want to file a return. In your case 2013??. Always get a few extra copies to fool around with, if you are practicing.

Its hard work. Hope this makes it simple.

FH.

At Full House stated, you need to start with -

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1gnrl/on-eng.html

Start with the Federal form and as you read through, it will ask you to fill out a number of Schedules (forms) as applicable. Also, it will lead you into filling the Ontario provincial form ON 428.

The federal form captures the high level information that are itemized in the appropriate Schedules and in the ON form. Typically, when you compile them all, you order them as Federal form pages 1 and 2, all schedules and ON form, original receipts (if any), and then pages 3 and 4 of the Federal forms.

The concept of filing is:

Report income
Report other income and benefits
Report deductions
Find taxable income
Find tax payable on the taxable income per tax table
Report what's already withheld at source
Your tax amount is = Tax payable minus tax already withheld. This creates either amount owed to CRA or a refund owed to you.
