I got a smart TV , but am not really able to explore the variety it can offer, due to non techie background, can some CD friends, enlighten on the matter to make the most of it.
I am interested in seeing good serials, and Thriller films.
I did had netflix, but trying to eliminate it .
Thanks for your help.

What is the model number of your TV?

Regardless, with the smart TV or Media Players, you are restricted to whatever apps they come up with. Tough luck, if you want to watch anything other than that.

That's why, I have gone back to hooking up my laptop to the TV for whatever I want to watch online. Simply, the best option.

I have two media players and they are biting dust. Other than Youtube and Netflix, they are mostly a piece of junk. I don't treat Smart TV anything different.

Agree with Febpreet. Personally, I think this SMART TV stuff is just a lot of hype. Instead, buy a cheap laptop/desktop with a HDMI port and basic processor (core I3 is excellent), attach it permanently to your TV and then use it as a HD monitor. Now you've got ALL the streaming content available on the web (movies, TV shows, cricket matches, youtube - you name it). Get a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse to operate remotely. Thank me later :-)

Good option for some ! but will not work for

1. Kids - My son stays busy with netflix (Kids profile) which is easy to navigate to on Sony smart tv.
2. Housewifes - They generally know 3 buttons on remote - channel change , volume and on/off. A keyboard has none.

3. Grand parents - computers ! ?
4. Girlfriend - :-) , unless you are dating a nerd !

Btw OP asked exactly an opposite question ! He wants some easy steps.

My suggestion will be to read manual (RTFM ! ) or otherwise think smart tv as a mobile phone or tablet. there are apps to click on, put few in your favorites and run them. To watch serials take cable package, for sake of your kids and wife. It will be easier for them.
Smart tv provides good wire-free optionz, with wireless speakers, receiver , play songs/videos from mobiles and tablets.

Best use - youtube.com/pair , pair your tv with youtube and run songs. Best for the home parties.

Hmm...To each his own. However once this is set up (about 30 minutes), anyone who can operate a computer and browse the net should be able to use (both my wife and daughter can without any difficulty)

You may have meant this in jest, but don't agree with the condescending opinion on women's ability with electronics.

You don't need to spend so much money on Smart TV, its just Hype. If you have USB port on on LCD/LED just get WIFI Dongle - it will work same as Smart TV , They also have small wi-fi keyboard to navigate. more or less similar to remote ( infact i find it better then remote since it has screen for mouse .

You are taking things now into different tangent , like a news channel does :-) .

I 'll steadfast my opinion , when it comes to connecting laptop to TV using hdmi, then searching for video streaming of serials and then watching some saas bahu or shastri sisters like serial , and troubleshooting midway and killing that one stubborn pop up blocker which refuse to quit , thats way too much for the women who just finished her grueling day. Its not about their abilities or understanding of electronics , its about the willingness and ease.
