I think they are trying match up with London, Rome and other famous cities.
True, it doesn't look that attractive from short term perspective, perhaps a big deal as the traffic grows and people prefer a straight line to Downtown in place of transfers and stops.
Sort of aimed at the tourists, I would say.
I had my days driving to Downtown to work, and pleasure of returning home via Gardiner and then 427 / 401 gridlock. This scene stays the same more over all evenings and it would exclusively help the travelers leaving during that time.
Anyhow, YYZ is the champion of the champion in Real estate even beating all third world countries if figures are summed up for the last 15 years. An outsider would easily think this city (ultra hot) deserves such facility...

I feel this is yet another bad decision from people who are managing public funds akin to the Oakville gas plant fiasco.
I fully agree with AT above .. We already have a $3/- connectivity from Union to the Airport .. okay it takes an hour but why would anyone want to pay $24 extra for arriving 20 mins earlier ... There are already cabs existing for those people....
And even if there are a few pseudo privileged individuals , would they be enough to make this profitable or is it going to be a waste of public funds ..I think most likely the latter .... They should work on other areas of the subway which are getting suffocated .

It is cheaper than a taxi and given that it is a direct line with no traffic it actually is a bargain. I would not compare to the TTC as this is stop and go and awkward when carrying luggage with you. Wouldn't compare it to driving either as parking at airport adds up really quickly (plus gas and time in traffic). Cost is around $27 versus taxi @ $50. Great means of travelling from Conventions Centres that host great warehouse sales and having a means of moving them easily to downtown TO afterwards (rather than bus).

The Union Pearson Express (UP Express) is now open to the public in time for Toronto to host the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.
With the launch of UP Express, Toronto will join the ranks of global cities with a seamless airport-to-downtown connection -- enhancing the region's competitive advantage, reducing gridlock and promoting tourism. The trip between Canada's two busiest transportation hubs will take just 25 minutes, and trains will depart every 15 minutes.
The train is PRESTO enabled, providing customers with the option to use their PRESTO card to travel for a discounted adult, one-way fare of $19 from Union Station to Toronto Pearson International Airport. This allows PRESTO customers to tap their cards on the train and connect to the UP Express without having to purchase a separate ticket.
The government is investing more than $130 billion over 10 years in public infrastructure, the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario's history. UP Express is one of $16 billion worth of projects underway to modernize transit infrastructure in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Making the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario's history is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
Quick Facts
•UP Express connects Canada’s two busiest transportation hubs and is forecast to carry 2.35 million passengers a year by 2018.
•Toronto Pearson and Union Station are expected to serve 190 million travellers a year by 2031 — almost twice the current annual traffic.
•UP Express is expected to remove 1.2 million car trips from roads across the region in its first year of operation alone.
•The $16 billion worth of transit expansion and improvement projects underway in the GTHA includes UP Express, Eglinton Crosstown LRT, York VIVA Bus Rapid Transit, and Union Station Revitalization.
I think metrolinx will be a huge success. Happy Travelling to all.
