Next time , go early and have prasadam even w/o donating as prasadam are meant for all and not only for rich people and most temples here have it on at least one day ... generally Sunday ...
Why do you have to go to temple for God ??? He is omnipresent. You visit the temple to get a feeling of peace as some one said , to get together as a communion or participating in religious functions like Holi or Diwali ....
This is very important esp out of India in a foreign land ... in some cities in Canada , temples are the only places one can frequent to meet other Indians ..... and hence serve a very important service ....
In stead of criticizing , have you tried to do some volunteer work to find out what is there 'parde ke peeche' ... and perhaps you will find out hard work and free volunteering ....
Looks like everyone enjoys free food ... You get it aplenty in temples ... but it is generally contributed / sponsored by others .....

Fido.
This free food served in temples and gurudwaras are very useful for people in need. Specially outside India, lot of young students come our for studies, they do not know cooking or have less money can get a real benefit out of this. I really liked this concept. This is a real help for someone in need. And yes, no harm in taking back home before it gets wasted. Try to contribute as much as u can, if not in form of money take some food stuff along like rice, atta, dals etc. This is a real help.
Sai temple have food on Thursdays and Saturdays,So, Indian will get free food in Canada any day of a week, be it in any temple or gurudwara. No need for food banks.LOL

I see temples being discussed heavily in context of food ! Why? , I had an impression that temples have different purpose (to pray to lord). Traditionally temples were built at places which had either some historical ties or event or some godly miracle observed. Now its being built and run like an office with an hierarchy. In some temples, paying premium (money), we can skip queue and buy an expedited privilege to 'meet' God. Wow ! VIP culture in God's own territory !
Btw argument that it serves communities is a huge sham, Communities are served by building schools, hospitals, old age homes, Orphanage, foster care, enrolling volunteers as firefighters, nurses, scouts, even arranging sports events & parades bring people together OR merely giving tasks to somebody as a punishment for petty crimes can serve the community.
Temples, church, gurudwaras, mosques, mathths and ashrams are serving one purpose - Division of mankind. Thanks to them, I belong only to a part of the world while others are 'others'.
Good post. Agree with you.

Lol ! Which church is this?
I have been attending churches in Canada for the past 9 years (different ones) and have never seen anything like this.
In summer, after the serrvice, there might be lemonade and buscuits.
In all churches, there is a pot luck or a free lunch once a year and that's it. Do you know that many churches are suffering since the audience turn out is low and many are kanju's to put the offering/
Canadians are really cheepo people. If they gave free lunch every sunday, all churches will be jam packed for free lunch.
Donot spread false information like this.

I don't write anything without seeing or experiencing. I m not gng to tell u which churches hv board outside asking people to join for lunch on weekends otherwise u wl run twds canada.
Lol, I am a Christian and have visited umteen churches in Canada. Not one church gives free lunch every weekend (unless it is soup kitchen at the basement which is open to all homeless / desititute) and not to the members of the congregation.
In big churchs, there are people helping the conduct of services (like ushers) and they do get free refreshments in the Kitchen which is lemonade, fruits and cookies and that all.
It is wrong information to publish that churchs give free food on (all) weekend to the members of the church / visitors to the church.
