GK Tarus,
You are missing the bigger picture here.
The OP wants EI and second career.
From what I gather in the posts OP has been doing the same job for 5 years now and is little tired.

Second career comes to a max. of $ 28,000 and your EI will get extended till you finish the course and in the meantime, you can do cash job to suppliment your income.

OP wants that. No matter what you say OP will not change mind.

You didn't mention what is your occupation, skillset, and position in the last company. Or, may be you did and I somehow missed it. Anyhow! Please provide with the above. If you already have about 5 years of Canadian experience, then in my opinion, you don't need to worry about anything. You should be able to channelize your experience into some viable position at someplace else. GTA job market is good, and I don't see any reason why you should be unemployed for a longer period, given the experience. Now, what that experience and skillset is, you need to provide us to advise accordingly.

No TK, I did not miss any of the big picture if at all there is one. I know what you are referring to. For that matter, you had been there and done that and you know the end result. It does not work that way. I am not trying to change anybody’s mind here and rather trying to give a reality check. The decision always lies with the person making them.

Actually, you are missing the reality or the so called small picture. Going through these skill upgrades courses while in EI, doing these cash jobs to meet the ends are not easy and take a lot of your time and energy. You are trying to do too many things and end up not excelling in anything. Also, there is no guaranty that you will get the so called high paying job. On the contrary, you end up starting all over again from the bottom and competing with the freshers. This may work for people in their 20’s or people who have secondary income and with the transferable skills, they will be benefited, but not the person in their 40s, depending only on EI and starting a whole new career.

I agree with lots of feedback here , I came here 6 years back, I was marketing manager in India , but only could find some basic sales jobs, because of family expenses could not go to school or make different career , I know desis are not preferred in high level marketing/management/pr kind of jobs

Only desis i found doing extremely well are IT guys or doing own business, anyways it was all learning experience.

I don't feel there is morally anything wrong in going for EI for sickness as I have paid for my EI for last 5 years , Also i feel companies have use and throw policy here , Companies never care for employees in case of hard times, though they talk lots about family values, employee contribution, learning culture etc ,

we see hundreds of employees lay offs /fired every year or become victims of corporate corruption. Mistake i made was I worked honestly for last 5 years , didn't even take my sick leave etc

Moral of the story , Don't be loyal to your company as when times are rough they won't think for you ! !

Kacchu....

I note bitterness in your assessment. While I too am an employee who has seen colleagues losing their job..my survival was due to the better skillset I had than most who were laid off.

When I joined the workforce here, like most of us, in our middle age, I noticed that our growth opportunities are limited. However, it did not limit me to upgrade / learn newer skillset to set me apart from the rest. This helped me when there was a restructuring exercise in the organization.

Just because you have paid EI during your service with the company and want it back is not rational thinking.

You must look to upgrade your skill sets and move on with your life than wait for the event to happen.

EI sickness you can get only if your doctor certifies that you are so sick that you are unable to work. Also it only for a maximum of 15 weeks. EI as the name suggests is an insurance. Everyone may feel they are entitled to it because they paid into it but you can use it if and only if certain conditions are met. Probably everyone here knows someone who has a lifestyle disease like blood pressure, diabetes, etc. , who are actively working in the workplace.

Based on the title of this thread - I don't understand the question.

Shouldn't the employer have the right to fire an employee - for whatever reasons he feels necessary? It is his business and money - he has the right to take whatever decisions he needs to for the sake of his investment.

We might be at the wrong end of that decision and the only way to avoid it is being on the other side - aim to be an employer or develop a skill set which will be invaluable to the employer. Be honest with your self and find out what you need to do so that your skills and knowledge can be used for the benefit of any enterprise and look to market those to your future employer (or customer). With a marketing background and experience, it should not be that hard for the OP - unless the intention is to milk the EI & short term benefits.

Unlike the middle east and India where all you need is a degree - here you need soft skills in addition to your technical knowledge to survive and prosper in your field. The earlier you realize this, the better you can prepare yourself.

Good luck.

Hiren
