I have been in Mississauga for 4 years. Mississauga is a great place to settle. But you have to do what you have to do so I am now in Calgary for the last 2 months I do not see any discrimination.

I do not mean to sound very intelligent (and I am not) but I once read \"You are what you yield\" , so if you are \\ or can prove to be a asset for a canadian enterprise why will they not hire you.

As for the companies here in calgary, My company paid for the entire expense for the move and more including hotel arrangements while we looked for a place to stay etc. And this was all after a short 1 hour interview. T here is no work place discrimmination (again that I see of), infact I have more friends (at work) here in the first 2 months then any of my previous work places.

Hope this helps for folks who may want to move to Calgary or Alberta in general for jobs and are looking for a positive experience.

Q) Please provide with more details of how did u landed a job in Calgary in the first place,Had u applied for job , from being in TO or u had been to the place to survey and applied after that?

Ans> My resume was on workopolis, my employer liked it had a couple of telephone interviews, I guess they were happy so they called me over for an interview in calgary and made an offer. it was hard to say no since it was too good. Also every one i spoke to asking for any information on calgary said only good things (except ofcourse my previous boss who tried to stop me from moving in all possible ways). The Rockies are very beautiful and I have not yet regretted my move.

Q) Also please share info on other facilities in Calgary related to schools, colleges , shopping etc.
Ans> Schools are as anywhere in canada, basically find the nearest school and go there. They decide if your child needs to be bussed in or walk. 90% of children are bussed in from various communities. The bus facility is good and affordable. 135 $ per year.

Indian shopping is reasonably expensive. Eat outs are less, as compared to the variety and extent in toronto and GTA.

Other wise the shopping is same as any where in canada walmart, sears, etc etc....

Q> you have landed a job in which field? is it the position u were looking for or u have compromised on the same?
Ans> Yes the field was same as I worked in toronto. I am in the field of software engineering. (Mechanical engg by profession).

Q> Please share more info in particular to questions asked and also on the issues u feel should be looked in to before contemplating a move.

Ans> The move to canada or any place is need based. There should be a reason to move. In my case it was to reduce the commute to work and other material reasons such as more money, less taxes, nature (my wife likes the mountains.)

Hi,

I am in Calgary for last 2 months & haven't really experienced any discrimination.

Got 2 jobs easily in sales at Telus & Futureshop. Interact with customers at Futureshop & don't really think that people discriminate. There might be some people who would do it but then they are there everywhere, even in India. Are there not people in India who practise discrimination?

Industry is doing quite well here, it seems with the oil price boom. Lots of recruitment seems to be taking place.

The major problem is extreme cold for around 6-7 months. Goes to -40 sometimes.

So if extreme cold is a problem, then best place is Vancouver. Otherwise Calgary is a good option. Again, it is upto an individual & luck also.

Be positive & be proficient in English. That will take care of quite a few things. You might ofcourse have to start at a lower level of job than what you might have been doing.

Thanks & rgds.

Rajan.
