After having waited for more than two weeks for a response from CAs from India, and after having talked to other members who have been involved in trying to set up a chapter in toronto, we have come to a conclusion that most of the existing CAs in Canada are either satisfied with their present situation (which is great to know), or do not want to give enough weight to their Indian designation and so do not feel that there is any need for it to be recognised in Canada.
Whatever be the case, we are treating the matter of having a Chapter for ICAI in Canada as closed.
I am also glad to know that though we read a lot about people not being satisfied with their situation relating to professional employment in Canada, there are not enough Accounting guys and gals facing this problem. I infer this from the lukewarm response that we got at the meeting - since there are not too many persons who are interested in doing something collectively to remove this problem of unemployment or underemployment, I would assume (positively) that not too many accounting and finance professionals are actually having any problems finding jobs or making the ends meet. GOOD NEWS AFTER ALL!

Hi Chandresh,
Appreciated you efforts.
Not to discourage but to my assessment is that Indian CAs here do not even pay their membership fee to keep their membership current and I think it is compulsory to become a member of the Chapter of ICAI.
Even I surrendered my membership certificate to ICAI before coming here and no planning to continue.

No I am not atall discouraged. Personally, I have never - never been interested in these political matters like chapter creation etc. We just thought that such a thing MIGHT help. But as is obvious, it will not, since most CAs, do not pay their annual dues to ICAI.
I have continued to pay my dues even though till a couple of years ago I never dreamt of going back to India. But since that was the only professional designation I have, I have continued to be a member of the body. Infact, two years ago my brother in law, who thought I do not want to pay tha RS 1100 each year had decided not to pay the amount and thus my CP was cancelled. As soon as I came to know that, I called up India and foreced him to pay the dues the very next day and get it reinstated.

Kap,
You did not read the whole thing it seems - I got it reinstated the next day by paying the dues and saying that it was an oversight.
