Friend of mine has been living in Canada for last 10 years; they haven't applied for citizenship bec. they are afraid of citizenship test. Since both are illiterate and are unable to read or write in English and can barely speak English. Is it possible for them to apply for citizenship and have any body sit as an interpreter in the citizenship test? Or what is the alternative if there is any?

Llooking forward to hearing from the experts!!

Thanks in advance!!

i wouldn't worry. unless if they've changed the rules, it is a formality. i once went with 2 polish friends and my friend's polish mother couldn't speak english. he was going to translate for her (and give her the answers), but they just waved her through the process. there was a chinese couple that couldn't speak a word of english. they also passed.

generally, they will ask you questions depending on your level of understanding. if you are advanced, they will ask advanced questions; if basic, they will ask basic questions ("what is the capital?";). i've never heard of anyone failing. what would they do, deport people?

***it could be a good premise for a movie though: tom hanks deported for not knowing the capital of Nunavat, trapped in an airport terminal in detroit with a similar group of immigrants trying to memorize canadian trivia, classroom style ,so they could be allowed to re-enter canada! enter Catherine Zeta Jones as a young canadian stewardess and you've got Oscar gold!!!*******

I have seen many such people getting citizenship.

Don't worry!

Someone told me that even if you haven't lived in Canada for 3 years, you can still go and apply for Citizenship and more often than not, they won' check. I don't know how true that is but knowing Canada, you never know :D

DT:

it is not true. Many people may have obtained their citizenship by cheating/lying [e.g. travelling via USA etc].

If caught, these people may be stripped because of the misrepresentation.
