I have heard that there are cases where people get fake lics. made (lic. from their home country) and try to use it to get advantage while applying for canadian driving lic.
I guess the canadian transportation ministry is taking staps to curb this practice and thats the reason they may ask you to get your lic. verified by your consulate.
I am sure they do it only when they are doubtful as my wife went for written test today and they accepted her old lic.
this is a situation where sometimes even genuine people might also get affected.
Manbir it could be possible... They may not ask the same to each and every person...
May be it is a new rule and some officers at some offices don't know about the rule so they dont ask you to certify your license from your home country consulate....
I didn't have to face such hassels of varification...
And my Indian driving experience was also considered as a valid experience therefore I was able to go for G2 within 4 months of G1

Whenever you experience joy, peace, security, equanimity or purity, it is only because you are aligned with ALMIGHTY.
Verification is not required to appear for the G1 but for the exit G1 if you get your lndian License verified one can appear immediatly or any time during 12 months where as, if you do not get Indian License verified then exit G1 test is allowed after 12months. For getting License verified form is available at http://www.cgitoronto.com" rel="nofollow">LINK and it take 2 or 3 days for them to issue letter.
Probably these a noble way of Canadian government to allow embassy to make few bucks from their country men.

I had faced this problem too but the reason that happened is my indian driving license was from MP and hence was in Hindi.
The desk clerk was local and could not understand hindi. He sent me to get it translatde in English. When I came back (less by about 100 CDN for me that time was hard earned Rs 3000 wasted) the clerk could read hindi.
He did not look at the translation and gave me the chance for the test.
Bottom line take these things with a pinch of salt and get on with life. ...

it happened today.I went 5555 eglinton E to write knowledge test. The man at the information counter asked for my indian licence.I gave the original and he asked for the verification by embassy.I had my DL photo copied and got it attested by the Indiam Embassy at Riyadh. The guy said it is not enough.Only the stamp and signature of the consular is just not enough. He says it should be written that holder of passport # so and so his driving licence # is .... etc and then say it is verified.I argued with him how an embassy will stamp and sign without seeing and verifying the original. He said sorry, and said go to Indian embassy in toronto and do it.It is a clear case that this guy wants it to be done in toronto indian embassy.
As this forum members have told, there is no hard and fast rules here. Its pure luck if one getsby.
If it is so important then let them have one copy of the format in which they need the verification so that everyone can complywith.
For those who have done the test. Was the test completely based on the book or was there alot of general questions asking for your judgement in situations? was there mainly road sign tests?
Anyone had bad expereinces in the downsview branch?
