Hello Desis,
By god's grace I found a job in my field of J2EE technology after only 4 weeks of my arrival from the US in a major telecommunication company in Toronto.

I have been following the forums on this site and elsewhere and I prepared my resume. skillset and certifications before coming here and that certainly seem to have helped.

I'd like to thank this forum for all the invaluable advice and information I have recieved and am happy to help anyone

Good luck!
Raghu

Congrats, Raghu!

It would be nice if you narrate some of your interview experiences and job-hunting tips for the benefits of others.

I have one additonal question. After reading all the negative experiences on the site, how did you prepare yourself mentally when you landed? Would be really helpful to those who're waiting in the wings and shaking their heads reading some of the stuff here.

Blue Lobster,

I was one of the many who was'nt exactly thrilled reading the experience of the job scenarios narrated by many desis. I realized after reading that the most important thing to do was

1) Start job preparation atleast 6 months in advance.

2) Identify a location of settlement and scan the major job sites monster, workopolis, hotjobs and compile a list of most sought after skills and acquire them. I did it by attaining java certifications

3) Create an outstanding resume with every accomplishment highlighted and experiecne detailed.

4) Get 2-3 good postive references from your peers from current employment.

5)STOP READING NEGATIVE POSTS!!!. It can be a big dent in your confidence.

I posted my resumes on all the major job sites and I got response from mostlly recruiters like CNC,Ajilon etc and only one employer.I had two client interviews. I did well in both of them but one of them took forever to get back. Finally on 1st of september 2004 at 2:00pm I got the most memorable phone call of my life and took a while to dawn that I had just realized a dream !!!!

Raghu, Congrat's !

Something I'd like to share with other CanDesi.

I started looking for job in Toronto 3-4 weeks before I landed. I almost had the offer before I landed in Toronto. (Prior to Toronto, I was in the US.) But I was told that the final decision (of hiring me) will be taken once I complete my face-to-face interview with HR.

Mistake that I made - I told the HR guy that I am leaving US and comming to toronto for ever ! He asked me questions like "Will you be bringing your car? How bout your furniture, etc? Will you be shipping ? etc" - I guess he just wanted to make sure that I AM LEAVING THE US AND COMMING FOR EVER !.
Price I had to pay - salary. I had the offer letter in my hands before I even applied for SIN and health card. There was no point in refusing !

But not unknown - Desi in Canada - RULES !
I fought back ! Now I rule ! (Just been just under 90 days)

Don't lose your strength !

Hey Raghu..great stuff.. That means no more buying groceries from your (future} store :D

Bighead...ppl who come from the USA do have an advantage as Canada is the closest offshore destination for US firms with the same stringent controls etc. As you can see Raghu's job is related with IT development. Readers have highlighted here (including yours truely) that with a US experience you have a better chance of getting a job here, esp in IT development !

Hopefully Raghu, I can take your place in the US workworce in the near future :D

Good luck with ur career and life in Canada :)
