Hi JS
Hello there!
The words sikhs, turban and hair appear in the statements made by the sikh gentlemen whom i have quoted. I am aware that you are not a sikh, friend and i have said that in the latter part of the post too.
Yes, i totally agree with you that when desis are away from India we tend to be more drawn towards our culture, which we then try to reconstruct in the foreign land and thats why maybe these kind of problems come up. Being very honest with you, maybe you would have also felt it, an person with whom you wouldnt even have thought of speaking to in India may well be the first person you chat freely to in a foreign land- to satisy the need to bond with someone.
It seems to me that you and me are pretty well on the same wave length, we were just trying to say things in a bit different manner.
I am glad that there are people like you around buddy

Does SF do any work other than post on CD??
Wow! I think he has set the record for the longest posts, and I don't think it is going to get broken anytime soon!
Hi soberflier,
I will suggest brother please do not try to become over-smart by getting quotas and try to depict a community in bad picture. You are right now in India, so far so good. I would suggest friend do not try to show smartness once in Canada. Least some body says something to you.
Personally I do feel, One should try to adapt & respect the culture that belongs to local alien land. .

soberflier,
I really hope that we are on the same wavelength.....
Actually many years back when I was in india probably I would have thought the same for other communities, as you do (at least that is the impression that i got) ..... Its the whole bloody geo-political scenario in india that raises a kid in those circumstances.....
So i dont blame you dost......
Its only when one leaves his country that he realises how petty these religion, faith, origin issues are.....
and personally i dont find anything wrong in being connected to ones own culture or with talking to the first guy I meet in a foreign land just because he is from india..... Well, you have to be in a foreign country to understand this........
And infocan, I totally understand what you must have gone through reading through those quotes. I felt the same.... This is exactly what I said earlier..... we get this sadistic pleasure when a religion or community to which we do not belong to is shown in bad light..... Only time can teach such johnies, so lets pray to god to bestow some sense on the world.....

Cheers,
JSethi

Here are my views.
Immigrating to a new country should not mean saying goodbye to your roots, culture, language, religion etc. etc. You should not lose your identity. But you should try to enrich the culture of the adopted land. We are not slaves. We are independent, intelligent, thinking individuals who have migrated because of some economic reasons. If tomorrow table turns we won’t hesitate to go back. Hats off to Indians who were sent as slaves to West Indies and Fiji few centuries ago. They have not changed. I have met many nth generation Fijians who still speak impeccable Hindi. I am so proud of them. I do not find any reason why educated immigrants should change beyond recognition.
In this context I fully approve the Canadian policy of encouraging all the immigrants from different backgrounds in preserving their ethnic values.
I am not sure about the ‘actual’ reason behind the French govt. decision. But I am sure of one thing: any attempt by the government to restrict the way one should dress, eat and live should be opposed not only by the affected party but also by all those who believe in free speech, equality and liberty. Today the restrictions may be limited to public schools tomorrow these can be generalized to all the public places.

Why dont you give it some thought and decide what you really feel is OK- that would be nice.
