daks is correct... as long as you have applied you can go ahead and join a job if you get one or open a bank account... just give them the number once you get it...
If you already have a job offer you can also get a SIN much quicker.. You just have to show your offer letter while applying for SIN.

like other said, you don't have to wait for SIN for getting a job. I got my first job on 14th day, w/out SIN. HR updated the # later. Nowadays, you can even open a bank acct with SIN, just show your Passport and landing papers (that has your add hand written by immigration officer). But you'll have to wait for SIN, in case you wanted to apply for a credit card. ( I haven't heard of any exception for credit card so far, if anyone know, pl post).
by the way, michelle288, are you the same person who asked Q abt US $ draft, and came from US ? I hope you had a safe journey and are happy here. let me know

actually reachash, you dont need a sin number to apply for credit... if you look on any credit application it clearly says where it asks you for the sin that providing your sin is optional...
under the personal information protection and electronic documents act its an offence for a lender to deny you credit because you did not provide them with a sin number... they like to have it because it makes it easier for them to match up your credit report...
its not prohibited for them to ask you for it, but its illegal for them to deny you goods and services because you refused to provide the sin number...
the only place you are required to give your sin is to governament agencies, in cases where it has something to do with taxes related to income (such as a job where you earn a salary, or you are claiming some sort of insurance, canada pension etc), or when you trade in financial instruments that will generate income (such as a bank account that pays interest, rrsp's etc) exclusively for income tax reporting purposes... any other uses of sin are illegal and noone can mandate you to provide them with the number...
the sin is very important, and everyone should be careful about who you give it out to... infact you should be very careful about giving out any personal information to anyone, specially with huge cases of identity theft going around these days...

well now i know abt SIN. Yes I came from the U.S. and had asked the question about the US bank draft. What I did not know and I would like to share with others thinking that US and Canada are alied in some way....that when they see a US bank draft they take 25 days to process it so if u put all your savings into a bank draft u are sitting high and dry with nothing till the bank does all its stuff. some banks like royal bank take 25 business days so they dont count sat and sun and other holidays...well we came to know after the fact, but thats just something i wouldnt get into again.
doing well so far- thanks for the advice.

Hey All,
just to add my 0.2$,
I also got my SIN number within 3 days of my landing...its because i had the offer letter the day i was applying for SIN card.
I showed HRDC my offer letter and they took my cell number. After one day i got a call from HRDC and they told me my SIN number.
After around 4-5 days i got my SIN card.
take care
Sunny
