After reading the thousands of posts here about things like
'life in canada'
'whether to come to Canada'
'where to stay in Canada'
etc. etc. I decided to post my experience and feeback.
After having studied, lived and worked in the US for the past 10 years(since high school) and having come to Canada 3 years ago, I wanted to address some of the issues that I see over and over again on this board.
Here is my advice(2 cents) for people.
1) First and foremost. Everybody's 'situation' is different in life. It is difficult to generalize. So please realize that what may seem to be a step up for somebody in life may be a step down for others.
2) If you are doing relatively well in India. (That is have a really good degree and job), it is quite futile to come to Canada. Indians just keep thinking of converting dollars to rupees and rationalize that even if they earn less,(or low salaries here) they are better off somehow. That may be true in some cases for some people but invariably you will sacrifice your standard of life.
eg. yeah sure you can live a ghetto life in canada(living in cramped conditions) and save more(when converted in Rupees) than in India but the question you have to ask yourself is , is it really worth it?
3) Please do not keep harping and complaining about the cold!
You know that in most intances 90% of places in Canada will be cold. if this is concern or bothers you, then Canada is not a good choice!
4) Over and over people keep complaining about not being able to find jobs in your field etc. etc.! and racism etc.
While I accept that there is likely some degree of discrimination in some instances, a majority of the issue is communication. I think this is evident from a lot of the posts on this board itself. While quite a few people seem to communicate well, a lot of people's communication leaves a lot to be desired.
5) Most importantly, please realize that this is a tough market we are in. Including for 'real' Canadians. Do not think that you are not getting a job or are having to do 'lower' jobs outside your areas of expertise just because you are an immigrant. I know plenty of Americans and Canadians who had to go back to working McDonalds even with MS degrees and high levels of experience.
6)Indians rarely like to take up challenges. Even if there are better job prospects in smaller places like Halifax, Yellowknife, Kingston etc. etc. they will flock to Toronto or Vancouver..
Finally, a lot of the advice posted by other folks on this board is good and true. (I have read a lot of good posts by blue lobster and crenshaw). These guys make a lot of sense. and we are always ready to help in anyway possible.
