After reading this I felt that China is way ahead of INdia when it comes to infrastructure, standard of living, but worse off as far a freedom of speech and quality of life goes.
Wonder when the mainstream newspapers will do a special story on INdia.

I dont understand our (desi) mentality !.. Why should we even bother if so-n-so paper/news agency does/did/will do a story on India ? Why should it bother to anyone ? If it happens, let it happen. If not, let it not happen. And we have the temerity to accuse others of whining !
Why should we compare ourselves with China ? Why not with an industrilized nation ?...

What gave u the impression that this is whining!!!!!!
My intention was to point out the fact that while the Canadian print media is fascinated with China they have not portrayed the rapid strides India has made. You have lived here long enough to know that in the west PR is everything!! Getting a story on India is one way to get a good perception of India in the Canadian mindset.
If people perceive India in a good light, this reflects well on ALL Indians. Instead of perceiving India as a country of snake charmers and beggars maybe the ignorant among the general population will recognize that India is the IT destination of the world and is an attractive destination for business.
Which other country is as close to population to India and whose GDP is growing at almost the same rate! There is a reason they have weight categories in Olympic sports such as boxing, wrestling etc. There has to be a basis for comparisions.
Anyway my bad for posting a topic which I thought has some intellectual basis for discussion. Lets go back to light fluffy stuff such as favourite comedy films, Jagjit Singh, or may be some imflammatory topic such as religion.

Well the Canadian newsmedia is not (or thats what you think) focussing on India 'cos China is way ahead of India in those crucial aspects. It is indeed a good thing that China has a communist leadership to take care of these changes in their society. India has freedom of speech and expression and see where we are compared with China... We still have to compare ourselves with China and other countries in order to get investment.
As for PR.... China's deeds = their PR... Less talk and more work. Work gets recognized, talk is consigned to the flames... ( a view realized very early by the software pioneers of India,, Azim Premji and Narayana Murthy). Lil wonder they have prospered but India as a whole (in the points that you mentioned) have lagged behind.
Why Canadian's do not perceive anything abt India is 'cos India has placed all their eggs in the basket of the USA/ UK and the EU... That itself should answer your question

India has an image of just a cheap IT destination.
Only when it gets the image of a quality IT destination that the world will recognize India seriously.
This will happen when all top IT companies of the world have there operations in India.
Just like all manufacturing companies have a plant in China ( IBM, Nike, DELL, etc)

I totally agree with you. dont get bogged down by solitary posts by people suffering from acute identity crisis. There are few johnies to be found everywhere. They forget that had they not thought, read and researched about another country, when they were sitting in india they wouldnt have landed up where they are today.
Safest bet is to ignore and continue....
Like anyone who would be interested in knowing what is going around the world, I like participating in such healthy discussions....

I dont totally agree with you loser, the initial selling point was the cost... but the fact is that no business in its right senses would compromise on quality to cut down costs.
I will give you an example. We were planning to outsource few of our development efforts, so we asked for quotes from indian and east european countries. You will be amazed to know that the east european countries bid less than half of what the indian companies had bid.
The indian companies have come of age now. India boasts of one the largest number of CMM 5 companies in the world. The selling point now is "Excellent quality at low price". Isnt that what we look for when we buy anything.....
