I came to this country about 5 years back. I have had my share of the cliched "up's and down's) - I did not land with a sack full of greenbacks, but many bags - full of hope, courage and the determination to succeed.

Just the other day someone told me that those who succeed in their career do not visit the "canadiandesi" website, and the only reason they do was to see how badly the sentences on this forum were constructed (or how badly the words were spelt). I am well on my way to the pinnacle of success (should I say in mountaneering terms that I have set up my "base camp"?). Yet I visit this site often..........just to keep in touch with the "desi community".

It pains me when I notice that all that people do on this forum is complain, grumble and shower their choicest abuse on the "canadian system" the "immigration Department" the "racist Society"..... Well the list seems to grow each day.

I am tired of hearing how canadian society does not "recognise Indian educational degrees (where for a few thousand rupees, one can buy a degree certificate), or how people who are doctors and engineers become cabbies (from a country where the conditions for success includeis whether you were born a "harijan" (read SC/ST).
or not. Even to this day in my "Mera Bharat Mahaan", your shortcomings, lack of education or skills can be looked the other way if you can bribe your way into a job. Or simply put, you can be the best candidate for the job, but if you can't afford to bribe the minister (or his personal secretary, the ubuquitious "chaprasi, peon or Attender", you can kiss the job goodbye (even before you got it!)

Such is the society we come from. Do you think the Canadians( or for that matter anyone outside India) don't know of the goings on in India? Do you REALLY expect Canadians to take us seriously?. There are exceptions - when you can prove that you can be better than the "Gora Canadian"(no offense meant), or that you are well integreted into the Canadian society, or when you can talk English exceptionally well (like NOT pronounce "snacks" as "Snakes" or "government" as "Governa-ament" or "Zero" as "Jeero".

Yeah there is a small choice. Become a Canadian in every sense of the word.........or PACK your samsonite, and go to your ""Tumhara Bharat Mahaan".

Good luck (with your becoming a Canadian) or with your journey home.

I wonder what is worse - not having a good command over a language (that too a foreign one!), or not having a good attitude towards mankind (specially your own countrymen).

Whining and complaining does not solve the problem either
If this all about helping and working with fellow coutrymen then where is the spirit in those poorly written, often ridiculous writings?

Some people are whining about command over a foreign language.

thats whining too....

If you notice chinese people especially first generation all across North america, they have a tough time with the English language. Dare i say much much worse than the Indians who make typos/grammatical errors.

Yet they are successful.

A few of my colleagues in US were chinese (citizens BTW) and They couldnt get a sentence out properly. One was a DBA and the other a programmer. Cant say how good a DBa she was but she kept things up and running. the other programmer was extremely bad at english. Sometimes we had to use sign language. Yet I remember I used to look at his programs and found them top notch.

I would call them successful.

This bulshit about English is just an excuse. Hopefully I can say (even with my negativity) that it doesnt affect those desis that dont have good command over it and that they carry on with their struggle.

Even I'm against the constant griping. And I agree that there's people on the forum who more content with griping than anything else.

However I don't agree with the tone of your post. First of all, that's not "all" people do here., if you say that than you've missed a lot of posts. Secondly, there is a genuine problem here where immigrants are disillusioned because they come with big fluffy dreams that deflate pretty soon. Although I don't blame the system completely like others do and know that there's no conspiracy perpetrated by the govt., the system certainly can be improved upon. At the very least, the Canadian govt. can certainly do a better job of educating prospective immigrants on what pitfalls they may face once they come here.

To me, its a joke if "successful people" want to stay away from here because they think the forum is too negative. I'd say they're either lazy or don't really care. What's the point in trying to make utopia a better place? Courage and commitment lie in walking into a mess and working to make it better. And I don't think this place is such a mess anyways.

We've recently started a "Success Stories" section. Please click on the section to read some of the success stories there. And please put up your own too if you get a chance. My suggestion, your call.

How do you know this Merc.? Are you saying that the chinese don't struggle with odd jobs after they come here?

There's a common perception that this country lays out a red carpet for non English speaking East Europeans too. Pure bull. I know at least 3 who've dug themsleves out of the dungeon here with steady determination and hard work.
