Chandreshji's idea certainly has merits but I feel this public platform is not the right place to pick somebody's English. This way you end up dividing members and that is not at all healthy for this forum's growth. Personally speaking I won't like someone to point out errors in my writing whatever be the intention.

Yes I agree with the object Chandresh has put across . Those who wish to learn can do so , others may choose to ignore.

Can we all share in some new phrases / idiomatic / correct english that we have learnt for common benefit.

For a start "mutual" is meant for two and "common" is meant for more than two .

"Dead man walking" I learnt recently was a phrase for the final steps of a condemned man .

U " take" a test not "give" it when u appear for it . Giver is the person who administers .

But then they say English always gets changed (read modified) as per usage . Take slang for example .........

Just as in any other language, the lines of usage is grey. The manner of delivery, usage of words, vobabulary can vary so much from person to person that we will endup in a bigger squabble if we start correcting others. Unless the error is glaring and is modifying the meaning of what is being conveyed, lets avoid picking apart other's english.

Language skills keep evolving for all of us. Especially for those of us who have studied and lived in the british influenced east. When i first came in contact with american english i thought these guys have it all wrong, only to realize that thier wrong usage is perfectly acceptable in the language now.

banks would write "check" for "cheque"... all "lecturers" are known as "professors"..."sneakers" are "trainers"..color for colour...meter for metre...the list is endless.
Even some figure of speech remarks i took literally like ...."get outta here!! "... when i first heard it i was offended.

I feel we all should just double check before posting to catch major glitches. I am a big culprit in this and many of my posts contain silly avoidble errors.
i better start paying more attention..or attensun...as a bihari would say .

Most APT topic, Chandreshji.

I find it very thoughtful a gesture that mistakes in English Language be corrected by maybe the moderators( a tall order though) and the correction be taken in the right spirit.

Hg6,

New or would be immigrants want to make Canada their home( majority of them) so how does your home language become a 'foreign' language?

I think, strong emphasis on good written and spoken English would be one of the best advice any seniors can give to the new immgrant.

regards,

The best part is that all it takes is to educate yourself. All this is freely available in our well-stocked libraries. I am always amazed how so many people fail to take advantage of this huge resource.

I'm currently reading an interesting book by Deepak Chopra who says that all material things and our thoughts come from the same primordial begining.

Here's what I've learnt from all the people I have read, so far. I have a long way to go but here is the gist of it.

Two paths that people often take:
1)reality>action>words>thoughts= outside in=focus on self image= drain on affluence in relationship, health and wealth

2)However, here is how it works for a successful person
thoughts>words>action>reality=inside out=focus on self= inward flow of affluence in relationship, health and wealth.

It works for me and I thought I'd share.

BTW: When i stress the importance of words, I'm not talking about the command over a language though it is a positive.

Emerson once said, if you meet a man of rare intellect ask him what he reads!

Reading really enlightens a person. Then it could be in character building, language provess or knowledge based.......but never can one regress if one adopts books as his best friend!

Nice analysis J3d.

Is board ke sab behen-bhaiyon ko meraa adaab, namaskaar aur satsriakaal. Itne din chup chaap rehne ke baad mein ne aakhir munh khol hil diya. Nerd saab ne itni acchi opening jo di hai, aur mein Chacha jo hoon!

I just thought I'd add that there really is such a thing as having 'too good' a command over English. And this is probably just as bad, if not worse, in an interview situation, than having sub-par skills. So while we try hard to improve our English (or French, as in my case), let us also remember that beyond a point it not only has diminishing returns, but can also have negative returns. Secondly, after a certain age is crossed, it becomes exceedingly difficult to improve one's command of language, and any improvements are marginal. Of course, nothing is impossible.

Although this great board has provided a few examples of egregious English spelling, grammar and usage (and Crenshaw sahib has gone after them quite ruthlessly) - English skills are not the critical factor in the overall Desi employment situation. There are really a lot of factors on the demand side of the labor market whose impact is much greater, but that is probably for a different thread.
