"How much useful is learning French"
I suggest you learn English first. That should be a bigger help.
Knowledge is never a wasted - whether you gain knowledge of a skill or gain knowledge of a language. I personally believe that a time always comes in one's life when he/she is thankful of a knowledge gained in the past when it seemed quite unnecessary at that time.
I am sure a lot of opportunities will open up in front of you if you can confidently say that you are bilingual.

A typo.
It should be "Knowledge is never wasted"
Had to correct it before Yellowknife pulled out a knife to attack me.

Again, I will reiterate that learning French is a waste of time. People should stop perpetuating the myth that Canada is a bilingual nation. It may be officially bilingual, but it is not bilingual.
Unless and until our politicians can ensure that all public schools are bilingual (true bilingualism) and all Francophone children are required to attend the same bilingual schools as our children, this country will continue on the path of creating multiple classes of citizens: Francophones, French Anglophones, Anglophones, Allophones, and so on. The result will be the next generation will continue to be plagued by the same issues of not being bilingual enough. Just ask the federal employees who were fired because their french was just not fluent enough.
75% of this nation doesn't speak French.
The anecdotal example of a person getting a job in the GTA just because of French skills doesn't make sense unless it is a government job requiring the knowledge of French. Otherwise, based on the percentage of French speaking population in the GTA, French falls somewhere at no. 9 behind chinese, italian, punjabi, arabic, german and so on.

wether we like it or not the french have something in canada wich we or the chinese or italian or punjabi dont have. it is not just govt jobs mind you that require french but lots of customer service, managerial and other jobs. i know a family who grew up in montreal and as a result were fluently bilingual and they have great jobs in private companys and were preferred over only english candidates. yes its important, but for a new immigrant or someone gettting their feet here i think that the first hurdle is getting a job and that french or no french can be a extra bonus u can throw in to enhance your career (of corse depending on the career u want). if u are after a kind of management job my limited exposure seems to say that french somewhat essential.
