Dear Canadian Desi Friends,

As I proceed towards my medicals phase in the immigration process the question regarding where should I land is gathering momentum in my thought process. Although I have relatives and friends in Vancouver and Toronto I would still like to explore different cities in Canada. I am single with no elaborate luggage and no family to accompany, all the more reason to set out exploring. My choices are:

1. Vancouver
2. Toronto
3. Ottawa
4. Calgary
5. Victoria

This forum has people who can influence me so I would sincerely appreciate your thoughts on which city is good. Believe me, I can be very adaptabe but I want to land in the cities which are poised to grow and become second Toronto, basically!

"Toronto is cramped with people, I am told and Vancouver has too densely populated with all indications that population there would boom. Calgary’s climate seems bit too much on the extreme sides of mercury. Ottawa to me, seems the dark horse." Can anybody shed light, please?

Merci!/Dhanyavad/Shukriya/Thanks!

Yours Sincerely,
Me2Canada

1. Vancouver

Coming from LA, Vancouver weather is probably the one you will like best (the least worst, if there is such a word :D )
But weather is not everything when it comes to deciding where to live.
Job opportunities in your field, cost of living, cost of real estate, etc. all play a part.
Vancouver has mostly construction, shipping and similar industrial type jobs.
Cost of living is fairly high too.
If that works for you, then great.

2. Toronto
Toronto probably has the best tradeoff combination between weather and job opportunities.
All sorts of industries are here and it is truly a very cosmopolitan city.
But you have to deal with the cost of living too.

3. Ottawa
Colder than Toronto on average.
Has mostly jobs in the govt. sector.
Some high-tech jobs also available every now and then.
Cost of living and real estate is cheaper than Toronto.

4. Calgary
In terms of weather, colder than Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver.
Has job opportunities mostly in the oil and natural gas industries.
Lumber and construction also fairly large industries.
Cost of living is cheaper than Toronto and Vancouver.

If you are a nature lover, then this is a great place to me.
You have the Rocky mountains all round you.
Lots of places for hiking, climbing, skeeing, etc.
A few hrs. drive will take you into the Tundra territory.

If you don't like cold weather than it will be difficult, though.

5. Victoria
A beautiful island for vacation purposes :)

I live in Vancouver. I am obviously biased. BC is poised for better and brighter things with the Olympic project and the new tide of 'good' feelings.

I would never be able to live east of the Rockies.
