I have few bengali songs which were "recreated" into Hindi. First and foremost, "Aaj Hridaye Bhalo" which is "Kora Kagaz Tha". Then I have "Rooposhi"

The "king" of re-using Bengali songs into Hindi was Hemant Kumar.
Think of "aei raat tomar aamar..." to "Yeh nayan dare dare", and the famous song from 'Khamoshi' that Dharmendra sings, and so on.

Naushad's compositions were creame-de -la creame !... But
"Hai agar dushman dushman zamana hum nahin nahin
koi aaye koi hum kisi se kam nahin kam nahin"
and those were the days when "Mamma Mia " was ruling the roost !

You call that qawalli ?
Sorry, I don't.
That is a cheap remix of pop/hip-hop in qawalli style.
I feel sad that Rafi had to sing it.

For me, a quintessential qawalli is --

"Na to karwaan hi talash hai
Na to humsafar ki talash hai
Mere Shauk-e-khana kharab ko
Teri Rah-e-Guzar ki talash hai"

You know which one that is, right? :D

Quote:
Madan Mohan and qawwali ?....Maybe
"Haal kya hai dilon ka na poochon sanam
aapka muskurana gazab dha gaya"

Madan Mohan was not a poor qawali composer, although is he best known for his gazal compositions and classical compositions.
Madan Mohan is to Gazal what Roshan is to Qawalli - both are kings in their own rights.

Quote:
Naushad was the qawwali maestro !..but barring a few exceptions...qawwalis = Md. Rafi....
Yes, that is true :)
Although composers like Gulam Muhammad would sometimes get traditional qawals to render the lead in the qawali, Rafi would usually chip in as well.

"Hindustan kya itni tung hai, ki Rafi saab ke baad yahan aur koi qawwal paida nahin hua hai" (read the words Hindustan...not anywhere else) :(

Who wrote Naushad's lyrics. I am listening to a lot of Deedar, udan khatola songs thesedays. But I just have the cassetes , the cover is gone.

I know the director is Naushad. Is the Lyricist Shakeel?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

I disagree with that statement. That qawali is just a proof of Pancham's versatility. He could only come up with "Aa Dil Kya Mehfil Hai Tere" and "Hai Agar Dushman" in the same movie. Forget the Rafi Part, listen to the highs and lows in Asha's voice.

And if that was not sufficient, listen to the qawali "Pal Do Pal Ka Saath Hamara, Pal Do Pal Ke Yaarane Hai" from "The Burning Train". It is the magic of Asha again. And the same movie has the ghazal "Kisi Ke Vaade Pe Kyon" by Asha. I do not think any other MD except Pancham has given such wide variety of compositions.

But could Roshan come up with an equivalent of "Dum Maro Dum" or "Phir Wohi Raat Hai" or "O Maazi Re"?

I do not know the singers, but Rehman has come up some with really good Sufi songs. Listen to the qawali in Bombay "Kahena Hi Kya" or "Piya Haji Ali" from "Fiza".

Movie like "Sarfarosh" or "Veer Zaara" also have good qawali. Just that qawalis are not prevalent these days as it used to be in pre-70 movies

Yes.
Shakeel Badayuni wrote most of the lyrics for Naushad's movies.
They were a great combo :)

Naushad rarely used anyone else, only exceptions being Majrooh Sultanpuri in a couple of movies and a few other on rare occassions.

We will just have to agree to disagee in this case :)
I don't consider them qawalis of good quality, if at all.
The fact that they are in the same movie is immaterial to me - it proves nothing.
Roshan composed as many as 5 qawalis in Barsaat Ki Raat, including the gem I mentioned.
Speaking of tones of voice, pay attention to Rafi's rendering in Ishq, Ishq.
Asha is a great singer - no doubt about that - one of the truly versatile singers, perhaps more so than her elder sister.

RD was very versatile, no doubt about that.
I am never denying that he was great - he revived Indian music and cinema after the greats of the 50s and 60s were gone and there was a big void.
What I am saying is that he was not a great composer of qawalis or gazals.
Maybe compared to the MDs of today, yes, but when compared to people like Roshan, Naushad and Madan Mohan, RD is not an equally good composer of gazals and qawalis.

Quote:

He didn't have to.
Those times were different.
You cannot place people out of the context of their time and culture.
Could RD do the things with gazals that these guys did?
Could RD do a "mai ri main kase kahoon.." or a "bayian na dharoo sanja" or a "qadar jane na mora baalam bedardi"....and so on.

Why couldn't RD do it?
Not because he did not have the talent or the training - but because his times were different.
He did not have Sahir or Shakeel writing lyrics for him, he didn't have Rafi and Talat singing for him.

I know you will hit the roof if I say this, but IMO AR Rehman sounds more like a computer software creating music.
His music is not human - it is digital.
His music has no soul - only notes and tones.

Also, call it my ignorance, but to me, all his scores sound re-hashes of the same basic type of music.

He is like a politician who keeps re-phrasing the same speech during every election time :)

I grant that he is the most popular MD now-a-days, but that is a case of "andhoon mein kana raja".
