Its all about Quebec—Our Problem, What is the Solution?
Voters in Canada need to know that with the Liberal party it is all about Quebec. They will do anything and everything in order to garner voter support in Quebec. Quebecers know this. Unfortunately, this puts Canadians from all other regions in a lesser category. The only province that can thwart this double standard is Ontario but Ontarians seem to think that what is good for Quebec is good for Ontario. This may have been true at one time but the centre of gravity of Canada is moving to the West and to a lesser extent to the East. This is due to oil and gas revenue and businesses locating in other than in the traditional Canadian heartland. Consequently, we have Quebec government as long as the national Liberal leader is from Quebec. We saw this with Trudeau, Mulroney, Chrétien and now Martin. The other liberal and conservative leaders didn’t count because they weren’t ‘pur lain’ Quebecois. They, Turner, Campbell, and Clark, were quickly dumped, as will Martin if he doesn’t win a majority in the next election that is fast approaching. With blindly loyal liberals like those in Ontario this pattern will likely continue. If you want change you must vote to break this political grid lock or suffer the fate of the craven. If you do not, Quebec will continue to set the agenda and march confidently toward independence when it becomes clear that she is a nation within a state by virtue of opting out and notwithstanding exemptions on federal policies and plans. The latest example is with the asymmetric deal on Medicare between the feds and the Quebec government. With Martin embracing ex-PQ members it is clear who is setting the tone and pace within the inner liberal cabinet. As previous PMs from Quebec have demonstrated, no price is too high to favour Quebec. It is sad to think that the only way to hold a country together is through political blackmail.
Trudeau gave Quebec a constitution with opting out and notwithstanding clauses which they have used to direct their own immigration, taxation, education, and restriction on English language training. In addition he gave them the OLA which unquestionably elevates francophones within the federal government and discriminates against Anglos and others. Also, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms allows discrimination by governments which both the feds and Quebec have used extensively. Mulroney tried to give them the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords but was thankfully quashed by certain parliamentarians, a conservative government in Newfoundland and Labrador and eventually the Canadian people. By the way, that was our last shot at direct democracy which revealed that none of our political parties really represent us. Mulroney also funnelled contracts and patronage to Quebec at a colossal rate but wasn’t caught, yet. Many of his ministers and senators, however, were prosecuted. Chrétien will be remembered for almost losing the 1995 referendum, his personal unity slush fund, his shady dealings in golf courses, curtailing the Somali inquiry, stonewalling the Krever Inquiry, stonewalling and going to court against his own privacy commissioner, and of course, sponsorship.
More critical and more problematic for Canada is the Clarity Act. Internationally, there is no legal right to secede. Now, in Canada, we have a law that in reality paves the way for Quebec, or any other Province or Territory for that matter, to do just that under certain unclear conditions. Martin has been in power a year and is clearly underwhelming as far as vision and action is concerned. The liberal conspiracies are already underway to oust him should he fail to win a majority in the next election. This will pave the way for another Quebecer to take the reins of the liberal party and the federal government. I believe we should pursue the possibility of letting Quebec go after we know the implications of doing so. They have held Canada back for centuries and clearly do not want to be part of this country. I think the rest of us would do better without them. Certainly, in the beginning there would be considerable turmoil and turbulence but we would survive. After all this is Canadians' most enduring characteristic. I am not sure about Quebec. However, it is time to call their bluff instead of repeatedly going through this pointed blackmail. But let Canadians decide rather than Quebecers.
That is the problem as I see it. What do you think? If you agree what then do you see as the solution?
