Hello Admin/ Moderators
Since, we have many passive desis browsing this site, it is imperative we give them a complete picture.
May I suggest adding a section called SCAMS in both
JOBS and SHOPPING sections...
I think ppl who read posts on this site should be informed about the Wankers who prey on helpless new immigrants or out of work folks !... In addition, desis can post their experiences if they can CONCLUSIVELY show that every effort has been made to resolve the dispute (with a shop owner/online store etc.)....
On a personal front... To all ya prospective Desis in Calcutta, Visakhapatnam and Bangalore.. I will be in India for the next month or so (Jan 9th till Feb 8th).. This is specifically directed towards students (or ppl who want to enroll in academic courses), feel free to contact me. You can reach me by sending me a PERSONAL MESSAGE (PM) on Canadiandesi.ca/Canadiandesi.com

I understand the context of your suggestion however the SCAM section is a double-edged sword in that it may expose some companies with suspicious behavior however it may also become an avenue for defamation based on personal vendettas.
Seconly, we can't classify something as a scam unless we have proof that it is. A member interpretation is not necessarily a CanadianDesi endorsement otherwise it opens us up to litigation based on defamation. Cosidering this, I would urge all members to isssue warnings while being very careful in using COMPANY NAMES. Sure, if you can provide links to established media that have already named the companies, that's fine. Otherwise please be extremely careful and think of the implications.
The best way would be to start a general post and then allow users to email or PM you to find out the actual company name.
We already have a few threads that expose Job scams. I'll make a few stickies so that users can find them right away.
Garvo, what do you think?

Why don't you use the word "BEAWARE" instead of "SCAM"

The title of the section doesn't matter - what matters is the content.
Any registered business will be entitled to libel litigation if they find that unsubstantiated charges are being levelled against them in a public forum.
Members are free to bash whoever they want in private email, but doing so in an open forum is a liability issue for the forum owners (and the ISP too).
If any registered, genuine company files a complaint against such a web site with the ISP, the ISP will most definetely take down the site.
This happens very regularly when people put up sites bashing certain companies.
If you need specific instances, email me and I will give you references to web sites that were taken down when the company they were bashing complained to the ISP.
On the other hand, it is perfectly ok to post links or information from the media referring to evidence against a company.
For example, if a job scam or a marketing scam comes to light in the media and is reported in newspapers, TVs or web sites, you are free to post that link here in the appropriate section.
If any member has a bad experience with a certain company or consultant, as BL suggested, post the experience, but do not name the company.
If anyone is interested, they can email or PM the member to get the name of the company or consultant.
But commenting that certain companies run scams should not be done in an open forum.
Hope this explains.

Yes. Forewarning new immigrants on the pitfalls here is one of the main reasons for having this forum and we should not shy away from that. I don't see any problem in doing the following
1) Posting links to established media sites that have uncovered scams.
2) Relating your personal experiences without naming names.
For example, instead of saying
"XYZ company are con-artists who cheated me and never provided any post-immigration services"
it may be better to say
"Post immigration services can be easily located on this forum. You should not need to pay anyone for this. If you do, please make sure that you get references from people who have already used the service and can vouch for it reliability."
3) Providing names when contacted by members at a personal level. This way, those who vulnerable can be warned specifically.
This method serves our purpose AND helps warn people. Also keeps us out of any potential legal wrangles.
