If on the other hand, you believe that beating the daylights out of your wife or your children is a part of ‘Indian values’ and ‘respect’, that would obviously be perceived as being extremist behaviour.........but then shouldn't that be reprehensible behaviour by any standards?

I mean no offence by any of this....

I do understand what you are trying to say, but the feeling that I get from this whole discussion is that all of you are fixed onthe notion that what Indian, middle easterns etc do is extremist behaviour while whatever westners do is right and the most sane thing to do. On the other hand, what i am trying to impress is that each culture/nation has its own accentricities and goodness, and we should respect those social behaviour, expectations and norms.

By the way - no offence meant Crenshaw - since you are a man of numbers and percentages and documented things - in my opinion (and I could be wrong though), the number of reported cases of wife and child abuse and organisations set up to take measures against such things would be much higher (no of cases reported to total population) in North America than in India. Does that signify that wife beating and child abuse is more of western values and form of respect , isn't it? We know from general knowledge that it is more in India, but general knowledge is no good in comparison to actual documented and reported statistics, right?

Well-said Chandresh,

How many innocent people (including children) every year have been killed by America (on the name of WAR against terrorists) are MUCH MUCH worst thing then what UAE is doing with his resident

perhaps there is slavery type mentality in the gulf but no difference in some call centres in toronto, there u can see the biggest bullies as team leaders. I am sure lots of people here have done labour jobs in toronto or else where in canada and found their bosses inhuman in their behavior. infact there are some who even frown when u take a genuine washroom break!

its everywhere, you just have to assert yourself. but in the gulf the laws support highhandedness sometimes.

we wud b digressing from the issue now but lets realise the fact that every place has its pluses and minuses and no place is perfect.

India has all the Indian ness that v can wish 4 but lacks a system and its clear functioning so v try 2 escape 4m there .

Canada proves 2 b 2 alien & cold and very far 4m home country making us fathom r own identity .

Mid East provides a trade off . U really dont feel being very far from India and enjoy all the comforts and sytems of the West . I think cost of living is cheaper in the Gulf then anywhere else ......... U drive Mercs / BMWs and shop the best of products @ most affordable prices. I didnt know Carrefour was a 'cheap' store .

Havent v witnessed hate crimes against Sikhs in canda and US ---post 9/11..........call that religious freedom ??? or take France for eg ....... u win some u lose some ........make ur choice !!

Hi Sanjiv:

Just one quick question:
After how many years of living in ME, you came to know the following facts:
1) Society is too intolerent and there is no freedom of religion and people do live like slaves
2) Cultural heritage is missing

Did you live with your family or alone?
____________________________________________________________
I can't answer your Q:1 as I don't know where from you get this?
Answer to your Q:2, I feel this way, people stay isolated in groups they belong. Give me one example where you have festival including all culture and religion (don't tell me about DSF please;) )

I am staying with my family, my wife is not Indian and so I see the people from two different nationalities atleast in close up. So far I spent 7 years in ME and seen UAE, OMAN, BAHARAIN, SAUDI, KUWAIT.

Ironically I put this forum to hear about Canadian worst experience, it turns out differently.

Hi New guy,

I t is a better place only. Only thing is the extreme climate and limited job oppertunities. Better to find out some jobs/ job offer before moving to Canada.

Restuarants are obviously not going to serve meals on a fasting day, so he had no option but to cook.

Say my neighbour is cooking a type of meat that I don't eat and he knows that.
Technically, my religious sentiments should be harmed.
But will I want him dragged out of the house, paraded through the street with the stew pot on his head and taken to a police station?

Just a few points which I could not bear 2 leave .

1. U try and do that n India & that 2 cook beef and let me know what happens ------- I ve personally witnessed heads being split open in such altercations :D ...........so much for beliefs and customs......

2. U do find restaurants opening daytime during Ramadan here ..... so much for Gulf liberalisation ........... During lunch u r permitted 2 eat n the pantry and ur muslim colleagues do not object as a practice. I m talking abt Bahrain and the UAE.... things may nt b same in Saudi or Kwt........ In almost all cases u r allowed 2 eat in privacy of ur home.

3. Dont compare the extreme Saudi Arabia to other GCCs........... u celebrate more festivities during Diwali and Onam here than elsewhere with temples and Gurudwaras not forgetting church .

4. Americans call for Human Rights when a 9/11 takes place and what happens when they themselves bombard Afghanistan & Iraq ........ ........ So much for Western perspectives.

Manasvi.

I started reading this thread but could not continue as I do not want to go back to my middle east days.

As an Indian we need to turn defeat into victory, and so it is very important to stay in the middleeast, make money, enhance our mindset and get out. Middleast is a second class slavery, it depends though where you are ?, it's not that only the arabs exploit, even those from asian countries, tend to exploit their counter part nicely.

As per Chandresh claim of living like king. There are no Kings over there, they are happy to compromise their self respect, values and then show off .

Val,

It seems u ve had a bad experience in the ME.

Otherwise u ll find most Indians (leave exceptions) getting 2- 3 times of their Indian wages at half the effort .......... Thats an efficiency of 4 times . Who s exploiting whom ??? An average grade 3 Indian worker is able 2 earn and send money home twice of what he earn in his homecountry. I wonder where else in the world can that guy earn that much ??

Just coz the GCCs r n transitional stage they need expats . Till the time they do make hay coz this avenue wont last long .

I have seen much more exploitation in India than in the ME . Here if u work 30 mins extra they call it exploitation ........... In India / Canada ppl slog for 10 hours w/o uttering a word.

Money is good .Lifestyle is good. Environment is friendly . What lacks is the permanence which is the sole fact due 2 which ppl think of migrating.

Manasvi.
