You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
I would suggest you rather stay in Toronto and make the best of your short stay in the city. By staying a bit far you can save money (though in this case you might not be saving money since it is a good and well known Hotel near the airport), you might lose out financially on extra transport costs and otherwise on more time spent in going from one place to another or for food etc.
One place I can suggest is Comfort hotel in Charles Street. This is at the junction of Bloor and Yonge which is the most important place to move anywhere in Toronto since this is the junction where you get subway both for East-West as well as North South. Most of the places like food, entertainment, shopping, historical monuments, and govt offices are either walking distance or just a hop away.
I had stayed in this hotel for 10 days and could come back to my room 3-4 times a day without any hassles and in short time. This hotel is owned by a Gujju Canadian (or it used to be 4 years back). If you have to cover too many places in a day, you can buy a day pass for I think $7.75 and go around almost everywhere you need to in that with subway, and buses available at your doorstep. It even has a supermarket next door which is open till midnight. Indian food, Mac, KFC, Second Cup, Starbucks, etc are within 200 mtrs radius. Queens park, CN Tower and Skydome, Eaton Centre etc are within 15 minutes reach! The nearby street (Yone Street) is lively till after midnight every weekday so you don't mind going out once again after dinner at 10pm - other places you get stuck once you are back in the hotel either due to lack of public trpt or distances or secludedness.
And so you need not worry about renting a car and save that expense too.

Regarding renting a car in Toronto, I will suggest not to do so unless absolutely required.
There are huge rip-off fees on car rentals.
There is the usual 15% (GST+PST), then there are airport taxes, etc.
In the end, you will find that your $25/day rental magically becomes a $35/day rental.
I had rented a car when I first came to Toronto and I had shopped around on several web sites and booked over the Internet at what I thought was a very good rate at $23/day.
But as I said, by the time all the taxes were added on, it became more like $30/day - a great rip off, IMHO.
I needed it because I was staying in the suburbs and had to come to Toronto every day, but if you can stay in Toronto and take the transit system, that will be great.
You anyway don't gain much in travel times because of traffic conditions along all the major routes (401, DWP, QEW, etc.)

Thank you all for your replies.
jago_desi: Thank you for confirming about Bus # 46 from Martin Grove to Kipling station and also availability of busses from Kipling Station to Square one.
Chandresh: I will keep your recommendation in mind for my next trip but I have already booked this hotel for this trip. I am paying aprox $ 45 US per night including tax so I think its an ok deal.
One question I had for you guys is that if I decide not to get rental car, what is the best way for a couple to visit Niagra Falls, Niagara on the lake etc. Are there other forms of transport - like trin, busses, tours etc ? Can you guys reccomend any ?
We were thinking of not renting car from here, but if we felt the need after going to Toronto we could rent one on the spot there itself.
Thanks
If you want to go to just Niagara Falls, then you can commute there via Casino Niagara Bus svc. They chg you just $10 per head, out of wch $5 is the membership chg and $5 is bus chg for a to-n-fro trip to Niagara Falls. There are various bus timmings. You have to book a week in adv. These buses start from China Town (SPADINA RD) & Chinese Mall (Mississauga - Dundas ST). They drop you off at Casino Niagara early in the morning and then take you back to Toronto late eve. After reaching N Falls, you are on your own.
They do not take you to Niagaa on The Lakes, for that you'll have to rent a car. If there is any other option, I guess some other member will post on this thread.
Enjoy your trip
