Hi Everybody,
Recently I was seing a popular job site in which Importance of Networking during job hunt was emphasized to a great extent. We have so many experienced desi members of this forum, who have struggled successfully to acheive their goals. I would like to request them to share with the young immigrants the importance of Netwrking and most importantly How to do it??
Comments will be appreciated.
Regards
Pankaj
"Networking" in Canada equals something like "Sifarish" in India.
Getting a job by networking means that you get to know someone who will recommend your name for a job to someone he knows. If you get the job, then it is said that you got it because of networking.
It is a widely held belief, and maybe quite rightly so, that given a choice North American employers prefer to offer employment to someone who comes with a recommendation. For example I have been working in a company for a few years and get to know of an upcoming vacancy. If I know someone who fits the bill, I can go and put in a word for him and the person maybe called for an interview which might than lead to a job. The only difference between what happens in India and here is that depending on the clout of the person, "sifaarish" can overcome any and all adverse factors. It can get you a job even if you are totally incompetent for it. In contrast, 'networking' here can only get you more options and opportunities. You still have to be competent to get the job. "Networking " helps in reducing competition, because if you are found suitable, the employer does not go out and look for others.
